I really loved Dartmouth (only downside were some of the students, who seemed a little preppy for me--oh well), and I'd like to find out exactly what disadvantage my relatively low GPA puts me at. Thanks for your time.

Hey liquidswords, welcome to College Confidential!

Even after getting in to Dartmouth, I still don’t believe that I can accurately reflect the judgement of the admissions officers in Hanover. Still, I understand you feel uneasy about this college process, and that is perfectly normal. Nevertheless, you’re SAT’s are fantastic, and, as far as GPA goes, there’s really no answer to that question. The difficulty of one’s school plays a huge part in determining the value of one’s gpa. A couple friends of mine who attended San Francisco’s University High School or Lowell, for example, have done quite with less-than-perfect GPA’s. I too attend a pretty good high school, and your guidance counselor may have a better idea of where your GPA puts you.

thank you, Hollow!

i know someone with a 3.54 overall GPA and a 2390 who got in early decision so i’d say you have a good chance. and she was asian so she wasn’t an urm either. like you, she went to a really competitive high school. the thing is, i think her junior grades were like a 5.0 weighted or something. she said she had a really good interview.
this should help you i hope :)

I think that it will depend a lot on what your school conveys about you. Your GC should be able to give you a good idea of your chances, based on who they’ve gotten into D before, who else is applying from your class, etc. Have they given you advice about where to apply?

BTW, I wouldn’t worry about too much preppiness. There seems to be a reasonable mix of people at D. If you really want a very selective school with a very unprep atmosphere maybe you should be looking at the U of C and Columbia.

You have a very nice resume (I wouldn’t worry about the GPA not being 4.0) so I say … yes. Some of your EC’s seem a bit minor, though.
