SAT I: 2030 (590 CR, 800 M, 640 W)
SAT II: MathIIC 800, Physics 780
GPA: 9.9/10
Class rank: 1/108

I have a Bronze medal from International Olympiad in Informatics(IOI) 2009 (self-studied for it if that's any help), placed 2nd at national olympiad, also participated in national olympiads in various subjects, especially in math/science. Have a programming experience of 4-5 years. Have led my school's intellectuals team to 2nd place in our city. Have graduated from high school with a Gold Medal( awarded by the President of Armenia, only 31 students got it this year).

I've applied to Caltech and Stanford. I've also applied for financial aid and I need lots of it.

i actually saw your thread this morning but i forgot to chance right away.

anyways, i think your awards and ECs are excellent. Your SAT score isn’t amazing, but it’s not bad at all. i think the CR score excusable because you are an international student and you’re not going to major in anything literature-related. you do have a good chance!

Most important is the awards you’ve earned / ECs. The other things were impressive, but my eyes popped at your awards. Hopefully colleges see that too; you have a great shot.

Thanks! My commonapp essay tells the story behind the IOI medal. Also caltech supplemental essay tells how I learnt programming and shows my passion towards math/science.

Financial Aid is the killer in your application. If you applied Early Action to Stanford, you would be turned down for sure. I’ve seen guys that get 2nd place in the International Olympiad and get turned down EA Stanford when they asked for financial aid.

If you applied Regular though and if you can prove your knowledge of English is sufficient (your SAT in those area is kinda low you see), you’d have a very good shot. BUT, keep in mind, financial aid could still very well end up killing your application.

Basically, Stanford’s attitude is this. They are NOT going to give Internationals, no matter how strong they are, TWO advantages of non-binding early admission AND financial aid. Simply put, you will be wasting your time if you apply EA to Stanford asking for FA (happened to many people I know).

RD? It’s not early admission, they can compare you to many all other Internationals wanting FA from the limited FA pool, so Stanford will more willingly give FA.

Stanford is one of those notorious colleges that turn down International students asking for FA in EA/ED.

You are absolutely in Caltech, if you are American. As far as I know, they considers only math and science. Problem is the number of international students, which is below 10%. It means around 30 internationals are to be accepted, brutally competitive.
How about Stanford? Stanford is the same as the other big liberal art school like Harvard and etc, even if it is well known for undergraduate engineering and science program . It means they requires their students great General Requirements as you see in their website. There is no ESL program in Stanford. However, there is a hope. They need diversity. If you are the only one person from Armenia, it is very high for you to be selected.
