I’m a really average test-taker but I’m hoping to improve my scores to get at least two 700s+ on the SAT I and all 700 scores on my SAT IIs. I’m trying to beef up my ECs but I’m not an athletic person… Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I have one more year to really make myself shine. :)

I'm hoping for financial aid/scholarships, because my family isn't that well off. Does this affect my chances?

I was at first going to major in Interior Design and Business Management, but I’ve had a change of heart (epiphanies during church are the best kind, I think). I’m going to hopefully do an individualized major/self-design major or some type of double major that focuses on art therapy, child psychology, gender/sexuality studies, and social work. I really want to focus on children.

Thank you! :)

Just to clarify, NYU Gallatin is my top choice, and then everything else is kinda even (except Marymount, since that’s my safety).

And I’m also thinking of doing some summer camp counselor stuff this summer as well.

But really, will lack of sports hurt me? :(

I think you have a really good chance at NYU, and I think that you should get into VTech, Syracuse, GWU, and Marymount. Cornell and Brown are a reach for anyone, but I think you have a good shot! Are you planning to re-take the SAT? It’s a good score, but your chances would be significantly increased if you could raise your score a little.

Thank you! And yes, I’m re-taking it again this weekend… I’m hoping to significantly raise my reading score because I want at least two 700s in the SAT Reasoning… my essays are pretty much good (I got a 10/12) and I just need a little bit more to raise my writing and reading scores. :)

Do you think the lack of sports will hurt?

Lack of sports will not hurt, but I do not see many leadership roles in your EC’s. However, if you can write superb essays that really showcase your passions, then you have a good shot!

You look solid everywhere except Brown and Cornell. As far as NYU is concerned, get that score above 2000 or 2100 to be safe.
Your GPA is great, rank is great (considering you have a good amount of students in your class), standardized tests are average, and ECs are pretty unfocused. You really want to take on 1 or 2 leadership opportunities before you apply to show that you’re not just giving them a “laundry list” of clubs.
Anyways, you have great shots at all of the schools except Brown and Cornell, which will be high reaches until the scores come up SIGNIFICANTLY (like 2200+) and you take on some meaningful ECs (not saying that you aren’t, but they kind of seem irrelevant in the eyes of an adcom)
Best of luck!

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/937635-chance-terrified-junior-high-hopes-bad-luck.html

Yeah, I do have a lack of leadership roles. When I had opportunities this year to snatch up the leadership roles, I ended up feeling bad for the seniors who were lacking in leadership roles, so… I let them have it. It’s a bad thing in hindsight, but… I don’t know, I tend to be easily moved to sympathy.

And as for my ECs… I tend to join what I’m interested in. Since now I’ve realized what I want to do, I want to shift my focus towards those things. For example, debate and MUN would be good for social activism, Save the Children and Operation Smile definitely benefit children… my group, the Yummy Tummy Club, is thinking of cooking to help the Ronald McDonald House Charities, which benefits children. In National Art Honor Society, we’re gonna teach elementary school kids arts and crafts… I’m volunteering for summer camp counselor-type stuff to get more experience in kids… And Habitat for Humanity might just be a summer thing for me. I just love helping people, so… :)

As long as you portray interest in your ECs and hold 1-2 leadership positions, you’re set. I was just worried that you did those things because it looks good on an application, which is DEATH.
Maybe you could write a good essay on your Yummy Tummy Club?

“GPA: 4.438”
Errrr… Out of 5, or out of 4?? (usually it’s out of four, and 4.4/4 is impossible)

Consider UMD College Park

@golfer111 Haha nahhh I don’t wanna spend my time on doing things that don’t interest me. And yes, maybe I could… although since my focus is children, I might write it on Save the Children instead since I’m starting the club. :)

@PlanetFruitcake My school is on a 4.0 scale but I take IB and AP classes so it’s weighted. So I guess it’s on a 5.0 point scale?

@mrtv247 Thanks! :)

Should I consider more colleges that are geared towards social work as well? :)

Which colleges should I visit? My top choices or all of them?

I got my scores back from the June SAT and received a 2090: 730 CR, 700 Math, 660 Writing.

I strongly recommend visiting at the very least your top 3 choices. I think your stats will improve greatly if you get those leadership positions (NAHS, NHS, SHS) that you’re running for. Otherwise, I think your chances for NYU are solid.

To answer your question on financial aid, NYU is a need-blind institution, so your chances there will not be effected by applying for aid. There other colleges I didn’t bother looking up, but it’s easy enough to check whether they are need-blind or need-aware; however, I know Brown and Cornell are.

Looks like grade inflation at your school, based on sat/sat 2/ap scores.

NYU may be need-blind, however they are infamous for giving terrible FA. Something to consider.

@Aphialtes Thanks! I’ll try to visit some this summer!
@bsmd11 No… my GPA is weighted, but that’s it. I just stress and bomb big tests like AP/SAT.
@AHN1245 Yeah, I already know that about them. If I don’t get sufficient outside scholarships and money from NYU then I won’t go there.
