What do you think my chances are for Brown, Dartmouth, Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, Bowdoin, and Duke?

whoops…i forgot my U.S. Subject Test…it was 710.

i also got a 34 on my ACT (36 math, 35 english, 33 reading & science), and i’m thinking about majoring in chemistry/possibly engineering

Hey dancerina, your GPAs and scores look good. You’re EC’s would be even better if you could show more leadership in them. I might suggest retaking your SAT, or trying ACT if you want to raise your chances at places like Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, and Williams.

Chances wise I’d say:
Brown, Dartmouth, Duke-Reach
Williams, Bowdoin-Slight Reach
Amherst, Swarthmore-Match

A lot will come down to your Essays/Recs. because you have pretty good stats, but if you can get your SAT around 2250, or get a 33/34 ACT that would give you a solid shot at the Ivys. Hope that helps…good luck :)

If you can chance me back:

Thanks a lot. When I wrote all my stats, I completely forgot that I have French Honor Society (secretary) and Student Government (officer for 2 years) as ECs too…hopefully that’ll better my chances.

Amherst and Swarthmore are more selective than Duke- they are certainly reaches-for all.

If you do ED at Brown, you could prbly get in.

I’m not too experienced with chancing, but here goes:

Williams, Amherst, and Bowdoin are matches/low reach if your soft factors (recs, essays, demonstrated interest) stand solid. I’m not too familiar with Swarthmore. As for Brown and Duke, for a comparative advantage in the application process, apply early to Duke; Duke will not be receiving as many applications from CT as the New England schools will. However, this is only coming from my own guesswork based on good common sense. Really, it’s about how you market yourself to colleges and show what diversity you can bring (hence why MIT-applying Asians face stiff competition, and also why males have a better chance at LACs).

Also, you seem to be very involved in volunteering/civic service, although they are a bit scattered (no “focus”). If a school lists community service as a very important factor in admissions (check CollegeBoard), definitely emphasize that part of your application. Basically, know how to market your own strength to the unique preferences of each college.

Good luck!
