Hi im a high school senior living in CA and I was planning on applying to Penn State for Architectural Engineering. In the west coast, the only school I heard of (so far) thats good for Arch.E is Cal Poly SLO and I plan on applying there too. The problem with that school is that they look at gpa from freshman year on and i didnt really do that well freshman year. Anyways here are my stats:

GPA: (10-12) 3.85 UW and 4.25 W
SAT: 1820 (for now im going to retake it in october and hopefully score in the 1900s or low 2000s) Math: 660 CR:590 Writing : 570
I also took another one that was less rounded : 1830 math : 740 Cr: 480 (probably bubbled wrong) and Writing 620

ACT: im taking in september and hoping to score around 30-33
AP classes : 7 including senior year
(junior year)
Ap Calc AB - 4 on test
AP Chem - 4 on test
AP Us History- 3on test
Ap Econ
AP psychology
AP Calc BC
AP Rhet. (language and composition)

ECs: 150 hours of internship
Library volunteer hours
Brahma Tech program
Peer tutoring
and officer position in a club (minor club)

Also, does class rank count? because im only like top 30% because of my freshman year grades. (which, correct me if im im wrong, don’t count towards my uc gpa?)

I believe Penn State will also consider GPA from all four years and GPA is weighted 2/3 in admissions. Class rank will not influence decisions greatly.

You can find a list of all the accredited AE programs here–http://www.abet.org/AccredProgramSearch/AccreditationSearch.aspx
There are just a handful.

Thanks 1moremom. but are you sure penn state looks at all four years because in CA the public universities (UC’s) and alot of CSUs only look at grades after freshman year. But If they do, do you think seeing improvement will give me some points? like i went from a 3.0 freshman year to a 3.8 sophmore year then to a 4.0 first semester junior year then 3.8 second semster . so like a 3.9 junior year. (unweighted)

I’m not positive but I don’t recall ever hearing that; maybe someone else will know. Your upwardly trending GPA is certainly commendable, but with so many applications to deal with I’m afraid PSU does not have the manpower to carefully consider that sort of thing.

If I calculated correctly, your GPA (including freshman year) would put you within the middle 50% of accepted students (towards the bottom), so I’d say you have a good shot, especially if you score well on the ACT. Be sure to get your application in ASAP.

ok. thanks so much :]

We attended a recent Spend a Summer Day event at Penn State. My daughter is very interested in Arch Engineering as well. From what I recall - PSU looks at all four years of your high school transcript.

At PSU you cannot declare yourself as an Arch Eng major until after the 2nd year and you’ve completed all of your basic engineering courses. The program only selects the top 100 students. Its a five year degree and the top top students may be selected to complete additional work that will lead to a Masters.
