Chance me please!

We all know it’s about that time where everyone starts getting anxious about hearing back from the schools they already applied to and about finishing up applications for all the others. I’d sincerely appreciate it if someone would be willing to give me their opinions about my shot at getting into BC!

I attend a very competitive public school in NJ (I believe ranked 2nd or 3rd in the state).

My weighted GPA over the 9th-11th grades is a little over a 3.7 (and is on a 4.0 scale with a .5 weight for honors and AP classes).
My weighted GPA each year is as follows:

9th: 3.8/3.9
10th: 3.6/3.2 (by far my worst year–both my parents were unemployed and my mother became clinically depressed for a while and blah blah blah, I included some kind of explanation on my CA)
11th: 3.9/3.9
12th: For the first marking period I got a 4.0

My honors/AP classes over the years:
9th: Geometry honors, Spanish 2 honors (as well as enriched english–an advanced class but unweighted)
10th: Algebra 2 honors, Spanish 3 honors (as well as enriched history; same deal)
11th: Precalc honors, Spanish 4 honors, Chemistry honors, Advanced sight-reading honors
12th: AP Calc, AP Lit/Comp, AP bio, Spanish 5 honors (and I am also taking physics, which is my fifth science overall.)

I’m a National Merit Hispanic Scholar (5,000 Hispanics are awarded this every year nationwide, based on PSAT scores and GPA/other academic information). I’m also (less importantly) a National Merit Commended Student (one of 50,000 nationwide).

I’ve done a fair amount of community service with/within my church, sing in my church’s youth band, and have worked over the past two summers.

I’ve been a varsity swimmer all 4 years and swam on a club team as well in my 9th-11th grades. I’m a captain of the girls’ high school team this year. Having said that, I am only mildly involved with other school clubs.

Thanks so much guys! If you want my opinion on your standings, let me know. :)

for some reason it won’t let me edit the post–but I left out my SAT scores!

SAT I(no superscore) - total: 2170
Math: 700
CR: 720
Writing: 750

SAT II: Math 2c: 750
Lit: 650 (uch, I know…)

URM with good SAT scores and an average GPA.

I think your solid.

Dear gracerose : Your SAT I and SAT II numbers are certainly on par with the top quartile group which immediately makes your application competitive. Your scholastic curriculum includes some AP course work that is challenging although there is no history or social sciences (economics/government) listed.

You might want to give considered to either the Spanish AP exam or the Spanish SAT II in order to prequalify for the language requirement at BC (part of the core). Given that you have made it to senior year’s Spanish program, you should be able to score a 550 easily on the SAT II and place out of the four semester language requirement.

If you could say more about your leadership roles (including swimming) that would add to your profile. Also, more about other school activities, no matter how small, might well help your profile to appear broader. Expanding on your community service and its IMPACT on the community will add value. Always be ready to answer the question “what difference did it make?”

In closing, your essay should consider how you will leverage BC’s environment to improve you as a person, but equally important is how you will contribute and improve the Boston College community. Right now, your profile and background are completely on the right track and your prospects are very positive indeed. Good luck.
