thank you but i dont really see johns hopkins, emory, and northwestern as matches what do you think?

They’re all crapshoots… Come on, if you have at least one post on CC you should know that by now! Good people get turned down at Ivy schools and crappy people are accepted. It happens for lots of reasons cough legacy/you own a business/you apply for a weird major cough but that is just what it is.
Specifically, Johns Hopkins Bio Med major/college thing is like this, I can’t say about Emory, and Northwestern is on par with Ivys.

Why not? Everything is great except for your ACT and SAT scores, which you’re re-taking?

don’t chance a bunch of other schools in the Cornell forum. I avoid the “what are my chances” section for a reason…

Maybe he didn’t know that, faustarp

@upennvetgirl727:

Your views on the relative selectivity of these schools are severely flawed. You also completely overestimate this candidate’s chances… with a score of 600 on Reading, MANY of the schools you call “matches” are unrealistic for the candidate… stop giving false hope.

As opposed to:

“Boston College - Match
Boston University - In
Brown University - Low Reach
Columbia University - Reach (they’re so brutal)
Cornell University - Match
Dartmouth College - Low Reach
Emory University - In
George Washington University - Match

These are more accurate chances:

Boston College - Match
Boston University - Safety
Brown University - Reach
Columbia University - High Reach
Cornell University - Reach
Dartmouth College - Reach
Emory University - High Match (FYI – “high match” means harder to get into than “match”)
George Washington University - Match
Georgetown University - Low Reach
John Hopkins University - Low Reach
Madison University - Safety
New York University - Match (though Stern would be a High Match)
Northwestern University - Low Reach
Princeton University - High Reach
Stanford University - High Reach
Berkeley - Low Reach
UCLA - High Match
University of Chicago - Low Reach
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor - High Match
Notre Dame - Low Reach
University of Pennsylvania - Reach
USC - High Match
Vanderbilt - Low Reach (very interested in scores)
University of Virgina - Low Reach
Yale - High Reach

IMO, your chances are not good at any school labeled “low reach” and above (though if you applied to all of those schools, you might get into one). Raise Reading to at least 650 to stand a real chance of getting into low reaches +.

I actually have to agree with I V on his measurements for most of the schools.

As a Korean, it definitely will make it harder for you to get into these schools (I’m Korean also and was in your situation a while back. Almost very similar to yours, but hauled my butt to raise my scores).

I advise that if you want to reach to the high tier schools like the ivies, you should try to hit 2200+ minimum. You should also take 2 SAT II’s that are scored high. If you’re bilingual in Korean, you definitely should take the SAT II for Korean and get the 800. Also take one more exam and try to hit 700+ on one more SAT II.

But, all in the end, what the colleges are really looking for is the passion/individual interest that makes you distinct from the crowd of applicants.

Very hard to just recommend any liberal arts colleges. I personally love Pomona and Amherst, but it is a subjective preference.

You don’t choose a major based on other people’s opinions. You choose based on what you are most passionate in. Your extracurriculars seem to be scattered, so it might be hard to find a cohesive ground to decide on.
