I'm a senior looking to apply to Vanderbilt in the fall. I'm from an extremely competitive Catholic high school in Michigan.

I visited in the spring and really loved it there.

Let me know what you think.

STATS:

GPA: 3.94W (upward trend) (Our grading scale is quite a bit tougher than public schools)

RANK: 27/153

ACT: 31 with a 10 on writing, will be taking it again this fall

SAT: Never took it. Should I?

EXTRA CIRCULARS:

4 years of cross country (hopefully captain senior year)
4 (all varsity) years of lacrosse (captain for senior year)
2 (varsity) years of skiing (Rookie of the year freshmen year then most improved my sophomore year)
Volunteer all the time at a local hospital and around the city
Yearbook Editor (this will be my third year)
Core Team Member (we are solely in charge of planning the senior 3 day retreat)
National Honors Society Member
French Club
National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine and on Collegiate Success
Tutor in several subjects

Lots of honors classes so far and senior year I'm taking AP Econ, AP Calc, AP Bio, and Honors French 4

We are not allowed to take AP classes until our junior year

State: Michigan
School type: Private (Catholic)
Gender: Male

No Legacy there (Mom went to Michigan Tech and Dad went to Northern Michigan(for undergrad))

And I'm white if that matters for anything.

Could I get accepted? (Assuming I write awesome essays and get great recommendations?)

Could you get accepted? Yes
Is it likely? No

Good schools don’t accept people who can’t post in the right school’s subforum.

He posted it in the Vanderbilt subforum just minutes before this one. He forgot to change the school’s name, that’s all.

Well you can take the SAT, but its a little to late to study. Your definitley a great canidate for WUSTL.

Imma agree with marcdvl, the OP’s stats aren’t quite where they need to be all around (gpa, rank, act, ec’s, course load).

“EXTRA CIRCULARS”

I’m guessing you didn’t make the School Spelling Team… :(

I’d have to agree with most of the other responses. You COULD get in, but I think it’s pretty unlikely, considering WashU’s desire to grab applicants with incredibly high GPAs and standardized test scores.

Bring up the ACT to at least a 33, really WOW the admissions office with your grades this year (though an upward trend is always a good thing), and try to demonstrate interest. This is KEY in getting accepted to prestigious schools, especially WashU. Visit the school; email the admissions office; request information; add your name to the mailing list; submit the pre-application/common app supplement ASAP; sign up for the WUSTL pathway; etc., etc…

Good luck!

20% rank and 31 ACT is not good enough for first/second tier without some amazing hook, which he doesn’t hae. Even if he raised his ACT to a 33, the 20% rank is killing him.

Especially considering 93% of the student body was in the top 10% of their HS class, and the 25th percentile for ACT is a 32.

The thing about GPA and Class Rank, is that every school is different. With a holistic admissions process, being top 20% at some schools may be better than top 10% at others.

This being said, with 93% of Wash U’s class being in the top 10%, we can assume that a goodly number is actually in the top 5% or higher (which makes a top 20% ranking even more suspect).

Bottom line, with these stats, there’s no compelling reason for OP NOT to apply to Wash U. OP has cross posted on many sites, meaning he’s considering many schools (not a bad thing at this stage in the process). ED (unless he needs to package shop for fin aid), SCEA or EA will probably enhance his chances at any school, and in some cases could be the difference between acceptance and rejection. Of course, OP will need to determine what school to use this option for.

OP says he goes to a highly competitive Catholic School. If this school has a reputation with Wash U as being a school of excellence, 20% might be enough.

Hahaa yeah I forgot to change the name of the school. Thanks for the input! Could I just not add my Class Rank to the application? Anything else I can do to make my application better?

rank can usually be found on HS transcripts
