Chance me pleeease

I'm a senior looking to apply to Vanderbilt in the fall. I'm from an extremely competitive Catholic high school in Michigan.

I visited in the spring and really loved it there.

Let me know what you think.

STATS:

GPA: 3.94W (upward trend) (Our grading scale is quite a bit tougher than public schools)

RANK: 27/153

ACT: 31 with a 10 on writing, will be taking it again this fall

SAT: Never took it. Should I?

EXTRA CIRCULARS:

4 years of cross country (hopefully captain senior year)
4 (all varsity) years of lacrosse (captain for senior year)
2 (varsity) years of skiing (Rookie of the year freshmen year then most improved my sophomore year)
Volunteer all the time at a local hospital and around the city
Yearbook Editor (this will be my third year)
Core Team Member (we are solely in charge of planning the senior 3 day retreat)
National Honors Society Member
French Club
National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine and on Collegiate Success
Tutor in several subjects

Lots of honors classes so far and senior year I'm taking AP Econ, AP Calc, AP Bio, and Honors French 4

We are not allowed to take AP classes until our junior year

State: Michigan
School type: Private (Catholic)
Gender: Male

No Legacy there (Mom went to Michigan Tech and Dad went to Northern Michigan(for undergrad))

And I'm white if that matters for anything.

Could I get accepted? (Assuming I write awesome essays and get great recommendations?)

… this is a university of michigan forum…

hopeful – I assume you meant to take another post you wrote and substitute Michigan for Vanderbilt before posting here.

when you apply to Vand … err Michigan, make sure you proof your essays – putting the wrong college name down is the classic mistake. Though it won’t guaranty rejection, it sure won’t help you.

As to the basic questions – 3.9/31 should make you a competitive candidate.

hopeful 7 - Wow - same error on two other threads. You must be getting mocked on each.

No need to take the SAT for Michigan unless you feel that you’ll do better on that than you did on the ACT. For being in-state you have a great chance at getting in as long as your essays and recs are good.

I think you have a good shot

Yeah I’d put you at 75% getting in, just have good essays and put your priorities straight. (Nashville’s not a college town… and it’s hot)

^One caveat. Your GPA is weighted – what is your unweighted GPA? Will that show up on your transcript? While UMich no longer recalculates and takes whatever is on your transcript, it will still pay some attention to your unweighted GPA is that shows up on the transcript or if your class rank doesn’t make a lot of sense (and yours doesn’t exactly.) If you are 27/153, you’re not in the top 10%, (but still in top 20, so you might be ok) which means there are likely much higher weighted GPAs (eg. 4.4s, etc.)

For this reason if you’re hoping for a lock on UMich, or Vandy, or wherever else, you may wish to ask your guidance counselor for naviance data about historical acceptances. This is one of those cases where because your school is rigorous, UMich might take MORE than it’s typical number of students…or it might be one of those cases where they take a certain approximate number each year and those students generally fall within the top 10%.

In the latter case, extra help and strong recommendations from your gc may assist you. Caveat aside, you look like a pretty solid match.

Hahaa yeah I forgot to change the name of the school. Thanks for the input! Anything else I can do to make my application better?
