Chance Me plz!!! comm. ucla. applying this fall

I know this is an impacted major. My biggest concern is my poor GPA.
I already completed the pre-req classes.Im an international student in a community college. I heard it's even harder for internatinonals to transfer to UC...

Applying to: UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCD
Current GPA: 3.78
Intended major: communication
TAG to: UCD, (may apply to UCSB using TAG also, not sure if it's ok to have 2 TAGs at the same time)
EC's: international club. secretary of phi theta kappa, work 10h/w at school, volunteer &etc.

Is anyone at the similar situation as mine?
I'm seeking advice to improve my chance to get into UCLA....

I honestly doubt you'll get into UCLA for comm because your GPA is already below the admitted average this year (3.89), and on top of that you're an international.

Yeah....I have noticed that...I am actually thingking applying for some other majors in UCLA...like sociology or global studies....

Do u think I would have a higher chance getting there?

You will have a better chance at a non-impacted major.

What r some non-impacted majors that can be related to communication in the future

Motus where'd you get your sources for the "average" gpa transfer? I got mine on the official UCLA.edu site. UCLA Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools: Transfer Admission and it says that the average admitted was a 3.5 so he is above average already.

UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2008

Scroll down to Communication Studies -- it has a red asterisk next to it.

wow, Communications is actually the most competitive major to get into.

I was accepted into UCLA comm with a GPA that's a little below the average accepted applicants GPA (3.89); I believe mine was 3.83 or 3.81 (I forgot what the exact hundredths digit was for my transferable GPA at the end of fall07, but it's something like that).

I haven't met an other UCLA comm transfer that had a GPA lower than mine (or at least, I don't think I have--some people may exaggerate their GPA?), but I've only met of a small handful (9-12) of comm transfers that got accepted so far.

I know some people that had GPAs in the 3.6-3.79 range with unique & impressive extracurriculars that unfortunately got rejected.

I don't want anyone to quit on their ambitions even when the bar is put so high, but applicants need to think realistically.

Your GPA is not POOR (just on the low-end for UCLA comm). Since it is on the high-end of 3.7s, if you get a 4.0 GPA in Fall 08, it is possible for you to boost it into the 3.8s! :)
While you are studying hard, don't forget to make your personal statements wonderful, keep up on the ec's, and make time for playing :) --balance out working hard & playing/having fun, so you don't get so stressed & remember you're applying for comm, what's the point in majoring in comm if one is impotent socially.

What did Woman.Of.Troy have? Like a 3.9-3.95ish? Point being, even with a high gpa, it's competitive as anything. Also, you get one shot if you haven't done TAP. That's the only way you're going to get them to look at an alternate major for you. It sounds a little like you're planning on applying to a whole bunch of majors ("I am actually thingking applying for some other majors in UCLA."), so you may have to rethink your backup plan.

a tenth of a gpa point makes that big a difference?

In the words of tony montana, im f---ed.

i have a question, if u r international student, how come u can have TAG, i think it is only for residents.

I don't think you can? At least that's what I heard.

A tenth of a GPA point matters significantly becuase we're looking at a very small range of accepted GPAs. A little more than a point in the other direction and we're looking at a perfect GPA, and they won't even look at anybody sub 3.5.

If you check on assist and look for classes with similar major prep then you can apply as a different major

if you have a strong gpa in your pre-req classes then i think you can still have good chance with a well written essay

You can apply as a "global studies" major. I know alot of my friends who applied under that major and got in. It's a pretty easy major and it relates alot to communcations. Plus, you can always try to change majors when you get there (if you don't mind spending an extra year at the UC).
