Chance me, plz XD

I'm an int'l applicant come from China. I've been grown up there so my major language is no doubt Chinese. Since I've never studied in a English-speaking country, my stats might not be as good as yours. But, anyway, I wanna give a shot.

Here are my stats:

SAT: CR 600 + MATH 800 + WR 700 (ESSAY 9) = 2100 (I think i gridded something wrong on the CR section, cuz I don't remember I skipped any questions but my score report said that I omitted one. Weird.)

Didn't take SAT cuz I took SAT I in Oct, the time was limited.

TOEFL: 106/120

GPA: ~3.8

I'm in one of the best schools in China, so the mid- and final-exams are much harder than those in other schools. Plus, I'm in the best class in my grade, which means that I probably rank 10%.

My ECs are not very much cuz, y'know, students in China don't have much time spent on that. But I did tried to have some, like student-exchange program to America for half month, original songs competition, piano, and many other kinds of instruments, table tennis, etc. These all lasted for three years(h.s. in China are three years.)

BTW, i think i might want to retake my SAT in Jan, cuz I'm sure I can score higher than 2100, but I'm not sure if it's necessary, can somebody give me some suggestions?

I'm not gonna ask for FA.

One of my recs is written by a tenure in Columbia. She's one of my parents' best friend. Is that gonna help?

This is the first time that I write a "Chance me" thread, so I must've missed something. If u guys think any other info provided is better, just ask me:-)

Thanks!

i think your sat's are fine, but ofcourse a higher CR score would help, i think you only need to focus on that. if you get a 2200-2250 then you have a better shot.

the rec from the columbia professor will help a little, but not much if he/she does not know you very well.

I don't know how hard your school is, but you should definitely be within the top 1% of students over there. So if your school is composed of the students within the top 10% of all students, then you should be within the top 10% of your school. a higher sat will help universities here know how qualified you are, and your ECs are not great, i understand that you've had few opportunities, and columbia will understand also, but they still like to see students who have really done amazing things outside class, relative to the opportunities they were given. I think you have a chance, but columbia only takes 10-15 students a year from china, so you'll have to be top 10 of all who apply.

Do you mean that you haven't taken any SAT II's?

You'll need to work on your English skills before you go to any colleges in America otherwise you'll have a hard time graduating

To confidentialcoll,

I think my school is the top 10 school in China, and my class is top 10% in my grade, and I rank 20% in my class. So... it's kinda like I rank 1% in China.

The prof knows me pretty well, cuz i and her son grew up together :-)

I think my ECs are relatively good when compared to those of who studied in China, but not as good as you guys'.

to Godfatherbob,

I took SAT I in Oct, and i didn't register for any other tests.

Now, I can only register for the test in Jan, so I was wondering whether I should register for SAT II or SAT I.

The reason I didn't take SAT II is that the people i've seen around me all got 800 on Math II, physics, chem, so I though it can easily prove that it's very easy to get 800 on SAT II. Those questions are pretty easy.

to bjoonsup,

I think i am relatively good among Chinese students, and I'm still striving to learn English. Thanks for your advice!
