Chance Me: Poor HS Record, Dominating JC Record

Alright so I'm a long time lurker but I've decided to have a go at CC. To be blunt, I was extremely lazy in high school. Not to say I would have been a Rhodes Scholar had I applied myself, but I probably would have been accepted into a pretty decent school. I graduated with a 2.24 GPA, 1750 SAT (610 CR, 520 M, 620 W) and a 26 on my ACT. Yes my GPA was that low. Needless to say, I ended up in a junior college after high school.

Long story short, I've been here a month and I absolutely hate it here with every fiber in my body. The classes I'm taking are allegedley college level but that can't be, I'm dominating way too easily. I don't want to toot my own horn any more than I have already, but a 4.0 is pretty much a given at this point, at worst, a 3.89.

Anyway, I want to transfer out. I'm taking 11 units this semester and plan on taking 13 the next, making me eligible for transfer to some colleges. I plan on retaking the SAT in November and sending my older scores as well (I'm paranoid I won't score a 12 on the essay again lol).

I want to go to the University of San Francisco, and I've been told from someone in their transfer department that I have a "very good chance" in getting in. My list also includes Pitzer, Occidental, Pacific (OR), Randolph-Macon, Chapman and Loyola Marymount. Oh, and Stanford :/ my brother went there and my parents think I have a good shot there. Let us not mention that though. The only reason Pitzer and Oxy are on there is because my parents want me to apply to some good schools. IMO, extreme reaches hah.

Schools: USF, Occidental, Pitzer, Pacific (OR), Loyola Marymount, Chapman, Randolph-Macon

by the way this might be in the wrong forum since I'm transferring but since I'm barely in a CC, I'd think my thread somewhat still applies since my high school transcript is going to be looked at. Thanks!

I have one child at USF and one at Pitzer, both very happy. I’d say you have a pretty good chance at USF, but slim to none at Pitzer. Pitzer accepts few, if any, transfer students. Don’t know about Occidental, but I think you could get into the others - except Stanford. You absolutely no chance there. Good luck!

yeah I know about Stanford. I mean it’s just impossible. Try telling that to my folks though  Thanks though! I didn’t really know that much about Pitzer, or about the Claremont colleges really.

If anyone knows of ANY schools around California that I’d have a decent chance at, I’d appreciate if you mentioned a few. I don’t want to have to bank solely on USF and worry if I’m not accepted.

No one? :[ I’ll take any help!

haha i wish i could help or w/e, but i’ve honestly never heard of these schools/only heard of a few in passing. I think i made the analysis that occidental is difficult once and you dont seem to have the stuff to make it, but there are two factors that i’m not used to evaluating: 1, your hispanic-ness, 2, your already-in-college-ness. anyway, please make a 4.0 no matter waht that requires, retake SAT (or try ACT) and try your best :stuck_out_tongue: i’m sure you can transfer out somewhere!

I’m not sure about junior colleges…and how is your weighted lower than your weighted GPA? i think u switched them or something hahah

try CSU’s

I know, my weighted is lower for some reason. I always thought unweighted is supposed to be higher! I’m not sure how it came to be like that either.

Transferring into a CSU requires about 2 years of study, and quite frankly I can’t stand one. That’s why I’m aiming for private schools; they’re more flexible when it comes to transfers.

@Moosecream, Randolph-Macon and Chapman are pretty unknown I’ll admit, but I have friends who’ve gone there and they’re pretty good party schools haha. A small tidbit I’m withholding from my parents. I want to end up teaching in my home area so the prestige of the degree doesn’t matter all too much to me.

I think weighted could be lower if you took lower level classes? I’m not really sure.

USF and Chapman would probably be a good fit. Occidental and pitzer are reaches

The claremont colleges are like a consortium of 5 liberal art colleges. They are all pretty small so idk if you would like that. Have you looked at university of santa clara?

I’ve heard a little about Santa Clara yes. I’ve been told it’s like USF but basically transplanted in another area of California. Would you say I have a good shot there purplesocks? For some reason it’s not often talk about around where I live. Overlooked along with St. Mary’s. Btw I’ve ruled St. Mary’s out…too remote! The campus is so removed from Moraga or anything!

USF is easy to get into if you lived into Florida, but even out of state you can get in.

@ Whosmarcus, i’m talking about San Francisco haha no worries. I’ve had that same mistake. My counselor thought I wanted to transfer to the University of Sioux Falls!

Oh my bad lol, I’m from Florida so when ever I hear USF that’s what I think of. Don’t worry though you’ll find a decent place, I’m in a similar situation as you with GPA, but you’ll be surprised how forgiving some schools can be with it if you prove yourself in other areas.

a 12 essay and a 620 writing section mean you missed quite a few sections :stuck_out_tongue: bump your sats up to 1900 plus and your options should open up a bit. also, you have the latino thing going for you, and youve been heavily involved in sports. i think if you apply to a few schools youll get at least one that you really like. Stanford no chance.
