I want to study classics or english along with premed classes

Seems good. What school are you trying to get into?

mostly liberal arts schools. amherst, williams, swarthmore, and middleburry are my reach schools, and i’ll also apply to public universities as safeties. what part of my stats sounds the weakest???

Your stats sound great, but SAT I/ACT is important–have you planned when you are going to take it? Also, a lot will depend on your essays as colleges get many many applicants with equally strong stats. They want to select students who are interesting persons and who will make up a bright and dynamic student body.

thanks!!! amherst is my dream school, so hopefully they’ll accept me :)

Good stats, but there are many more qualified applicants who apply than are accepted. Be sure to focus on your essay in order to set yourself apart. And to reiterate the previous poster’s sentiment, SAT I’s are quite important.

thanks! i’ll be taking the SATs for the first time this weekend! hopefully i’ll do alright

Looking at your school list, you should consider applying to Dartmouth. It is very similar to the LACs you have mentioned.

Ehh… I went to visit Dartmouth last week. I cannot say that provides anywhere near the intimate environment available at the LACs… contrary to what they claim.

i just got my SATs, and I got a 2040. this was my first time taking the test…i got around 2200 on two practice tests; i don’t know what happened during the real thing

hey everyone. i just got my act scores, and i got a 33 (29E, 34M, 34R, 35S). I already signed up for the june test, and i’m pretty sure that i can get at least a 34 because my english/writing score was lower than expected (29/8). do you think that my score is high enough?

So, I probably did so little compared to you and got into Amherst, so…I think a lot of it is chance. But being from Nebraska helps because they like getting everyone from each state, and there less people who apply from Nebraska.

Classics sounds cool, far better than the standard english major so many people get…

thanks! ahh, i just want to graduate and go to college!!!

Don’t bother with Amherst…come to Williams! The professors in the classics, English, and philosophy departments here are some of the greatest people you’ll ever meet. And musicians are especially appreciated at Williams as opposed to at those other liberal arts schools…although UMass Amherst has an amazing music program if you could get in on that. But why dream for only #2? ;)

I got accepted to Williams and Amherst. I decided on Amherst for its location and perceived priorities of diversity and progress. I really liked Williams, but the location was really a deal breaker.

I think a 33 is good, given that you live in Nebraska. If you can score higher, great, but you look like an interesting candidate–focus on your essays!

Don’t go to Williams, you’d end up as someone who has to mention a biased ranking all of the time to make themselves believe that they’re going to the best school in the country. It’s a great place and all, but there are several other colleges that can be better fits for you (and you won’t need a ranking to re-assure yourself of that).

With your stats and ECs, if you can get your SAT score up to 2200 or above, you have a definite chance.

just an update. i got a 2140 on my SAT I, and i’ll be taking Sat II (chem, french, lit) and act in june!

My daughter had the same GPA as you, and scored 2170 on the SAT’s, and had a 33 composite on the ACT’s, and didn’t even make the wait list at Amherst. A lot of it is luck, but if you really want a chance, I would get my SAT’s above 2200+, or my ACT up to at least 34. An SAT composite of 2040 probably won’t get you in no matter what unless you have some really special hook.
