Chance Me (Pretty Please)

Hi guys, I'm a senior guy from Pennsylvania and (as can definitely be seen from my username, which I apologize for and will replace once I get the time to actually join this forum and participate) I'm worried about my chances for Early Decision to Carnegie Mellon (CIT, currently battling between putting down just general engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, or ECE). Also, I applied Early Action to Georgia Tech for Computer Science so chancing me on that would be nice too! Here are my stats:

Geography: US Citizen in Southeast Pennsylvania going to a Catholic high school
Race: Indian
Current Class Rank: 31 out of 295
GPA: 4.0, unweighted (we aren't given weighted GPA's)
AP Test Scores: AP Chemistry, 5; AP English (Composition), 5 [it'd be good to mention that these and AP History (well, AP Biology is offered but you can't double AP science at my school) are the only APs offered for junior year unless you're a transfer student or took online classes to skip, which I was considering for Calculus but no point because we don't have any more advanced math subjects]
SAT Scores: 740(M) 740(CR) 730(W)
SAT II Scores: Chemistry, 800; Math II, 720

Current Year Classload: Widener University Dual Enrollment (ENGR111, a general engineering course, for one semester, and Computer Aided Design for the other), AP Computer Science (online class, I get a class period each day for it), AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP Literature, and Honors Theology 4 (required, I go to Catholic school).

EC's: TV Studio (11th & 12th, President), Theater (9th-12th, done in grade school too [6th-8th]), Forensics Speech/Debate, Programming Club (12th; I'm a lecturer in that club [it's like a student-run class], I helped found it for the year), Mathletes (11th & 12th; The team I was in (B team, for Juniors) got 2nd at districts), Leadership Council (12th, Club for presidents of clubs), NHS (12th), and Business Club (12th; also a new club)

Essay: Pretty darn good, if it's not too cocky to say so (my friends and teachers really like it)

Supplement Essay: Work in progress. Oops.

Shown Interest: I had an admissions counselor interview and have visited the campus twice (one being for the interview). The interview was good and the interviewer and I got along, but I was a tad awkward (as I tend to be).

Extraneous: I'm a National Merit Semi-Finalist, a cinematographer (I have a 1st place in a Book trailer contest to attest for that), a photographer (I have my art supplement for that), a 3D modeler (maybe will have that in my art supplement but it's a budding skill right now), and a nerd (Best team prize at the Chester County Science Fair).

Note: my high school is known for being the most rigorous in the area. Students here are known for their lack of sleep. AP classes are highly selective, with only 25-30 students (depending on the teacher) per AP course. The system is quite skewed against those who take fuller courseloads, but it’s worth it because the teachers are way better (well, in most cases).

Just gonna bump this thread. Please respond people! Thanks! I’m waiting for my October results for the regular SAT, and I’m going to retake the Math II in the start of November.

You have a good chance, don’t worry. Your stats are great.

Pretty decent shot.

Thanks for the responses! Is there anything in my resume that’s lacking? I know my rank is pretty low for CMU but oh well, freshmen year was bad. And are my standardized testing scores alright? (I’m considering taking the ACTs) Thank you so much for your help!

Just gonna bump this. Responding to those aforementioned questions would be really helpful as I need to know what to improve!

Well based on what I’ve calculated your Composite SAT score is in the top 30% of their admitted students, and your SAT II’s are fine. Your GPA is there (can’t really get much higher than a 4.0), and in total you’ve take 2 AP’s and currently taking 4, alongside a college course in your intended major showing interest. You have good EC’s especially if you plan on majoring in something that has to do with engineering, and you have some nice awards. If you have any volunteer or work experience? That would also help. The only problem I see is your class rank, which you really shouldn’t worry too much about, that’s something that they would overlook considering your credentials. Don’t worry about being accepted, especially if you’re applying ED, because as of now I would consider it a safety if you’re applying ED. I don’t know if you’ll get any scholarships, but I also don’t know if you’re looking for those.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply! I have 58 hours of volunteering at my school running events, and 9 hours in other stuff. Should I perhaps apply to SCS? I’d love to but I always thought of it as a high reach for me.

SCS I would say is a reach. I wouldn’t say a high reach, but definitely a reach. You’re SAT scores are about the 26% percentile of what the accepted students had, but your GPA is above their average. I haven’t applied to CMU so I don’t know if it’s possible to apply to several schools at the same time. If it is, I’d recommend applying to SCS and some of their other schools. For CIT your SATs are in the top 45% (55% percentile), and your GPA is above their average. I would definitely say you have a much better chance getting accepted to CIT than SCS. Even though you may not be accepted to SCS, there is always the possibility of internally transferring from one of the schools to SCS. I think you’d have a better chance at transferring from CIT to SCS, since Engineering and Computer science have more similarities than let’s say… Finance. I’d apply to CIT ED, but if you really are dead set on Computer Science as your major, I’d apply to SCS. Even if you don’t get into SCS, you have Georgia Tech, which I believe you will get into. Georgia Tech is a great college for Computer Science, and it definitely should not be seen as a 2nd to CMU. Both schools offer great education, and great job placement.
