PS: Any suggestions on colleges that are appropriate to my profile?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE :)

If you want to do hotel management I wouldn’t really recommend NYU to be honest. It’s still pretty new and there’s other schools that you can go to for the same price or cheaper like Purdue and Cornell. Both these schools have a great hotel management program basically top 3 in the nation. They also both have a good business school and a strong engineering program. I went to Purdue for a year for hotel mgmt so if you want some info on the school or program just PM me. I also have others schools in mind too since hotel mgmt was my selected major since 6 years ago.

i know cornells a better hotel school but i want to live in new york and actually intern/work in real hotels in manhattan… so do i have a chance???

bumpbumpbump

It doesn’t matter if the program is new, it’s NYU. Jobs in [hotel] management are the kinds of jobs where people move up because of other, inherent, skills. Not the college they went to. Okay chances, tougher if you’re international. NYU also doesn’t give US students too much aid, to be prepared to send in a huge check. The GPA is a little low, but the rest of everything is above average for NYU candidates.

NYU Poly (formerly The Brooklyn Poly, now working on a complete merge with NYU) would probably be a safety for you, and you could live in the city, and look into one of their various management degrees. They also offer generous financial aid. I’d say that school would be a safety (if you want to live in NY) but I wouldn’t say you’d get into the Honors College.

are you serious do i have to bump every other post ?!

I hope you know getting a job at a REAL hotel in NYC will not be possible until you have Junior standings too… Unless you have connections of some sort or have past working experience in hotels. Hotels rarely give interns a sophomore or freshman since you barely learned anything about the industry. To be honest it doesn’t even matter where your located for interns. But whatever your decision. Just my two cents.

Ok. Your GPA is lower than it seems it should be, however I think internationally speaking grading is more difficult, which might help, though I don’t necessarily know what I’m talking about. In any case, your test scores show that your GPA doesn’t accurately reflect your intelligence necessarily - and because of that, I think that for all of the schools you listed, you have an excellent shot. I’m not sure what effect applying as an international applicant will have, however these would be my guesses:

NYU (SCPS-hotel management) -ED - match/slight reach maybe
Emory - match/maybe slight reach
Wake Forest - not sure about this one
UMich - low match
USC - in
Case Western Reserve - in
Georgia Tech - in
UWisconsin-Madison - in
UWashington-Seattle - in
Syracuse - in

I hope that gives you a good spread. As it is, I don’t know how international status will affect you - however, if you can explain your GPA somehow, I think the slight reach maybes will become easy matches.

BUMP (:

and thanks to everyone who’s already answered (:

I don’t have much experience chancing international students, and I’m not that familiar with IB, but I’d have to agree and say that NYU is a slight reach. Cornell is widely recognized as one of the top 2 hospitality schools in the US, so maybe tyou should consider applying there as a reach.

Thanks for chancing me. I’d say that your GPA is a little low, but SATs are very high. NYU may be a good match. Emory’s a bit of a reach, but you have very good chances at all the other universities. I agree that you should try Cornell too. It’s probably the best hospitality school in the US.

okay since everyone, including my parents, my counselors, my friends, you, me, has been suggesting that i should apply to cornell i will be applying there but not as ED since the school has already submitted everything to nyu
thanks everyone (:

You’re in a tough international pool, especially coming from China. There will be many other applicants with your grades/scores (and better) so I’d honestly say that a the first half of your list would be reaches/high matches and the second half more safeties.

Good luck

It seems like you have a pretty good profile, aside from your GPA. I’d say the last half is probably good matches. The first half (from USC up, and maybe Georgia Tech - not sure) are probably in the slight reach to reach range. Thanks for chancing me. :)

You look like a solid candidate for NYU, even if you don’t get ED’d expect a deferral to regular decision at worst (which I still consider a success) and then acceptance by April

not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but have you looked at Boston University? It has a good, established hotel management program, and it’s in Boston, where there are PLENTY of hotels.

GO KOREAN!! WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOfddfdfdfdfdfdddddd

hahahaha sorry
your test scores and ecs are great. I think you have a good shot at all the schools you mentioned But most of all your GPA is really sexy . what about the class rank? as long as you are in top 10% or at least quartile that sexy GPA won’t really hurt you
good LUCKKKKKKK

thank you all (: esp you lifegr lol

i would love more thoughts (:

I don’t know too much about the hotel program at NYU, but I have heard some things about the Cornell hotel school. Admissions there is based a lot more on work experience and interning than GPA and test scores.
For the other schools…having those IB courses help explain that low GPA (I’m not all too familiar with them though… what exactly does “NOT A DIPLOMA CANDIDATE” mean?). Good test scores. So bottom line:
NYU (SCPS-hotel management) -ED - not entirely sure, but it looks like a high match/slight reach. Looks like you have a fighting chance.
Emory - slight reach/reach
Wake Forest - low match/match
UMich - match
USC - slight reach/reach
Case Western Reserve - low match
Georgia Tech - low match
UWisconsin-Madison - in
UWashington-Seattle - in
Syracuse - in

IB has a full diploma program where you take 6 courses and theory of knowledge class + “CAS” hours and extended essay…

thanks (: any other ??
