Chance me RD '17

Hi all.

I wanna be straightforward - My GPA is outright bad for the schools that I am applying to, but i'm trying to be the candidate who can compensate with ECs/Testing. What are my chances at getting into Cornell RD '17?

I'm an Indian (as in the asian variety xD)
Go to one of most competitive public schools in MA

GPA: 3.5/4.0 (UW), 4.0/5.0 (W)
SAT (superscore): 2340 (740 CR, 800 M, 800 W)
SAT II: 800 Math IIC (also 800 Math IC but nobody cares xD), 730 Chem (ew), 710 Lit
AP: Comp Sci A - 5, BC Calc - 5, Chem - 4, Physics - 4, US History - 4
Taking Psych, Spanish, and Stats this year predicted all 5's

Statistics H/AP
Science Fiction and Fantasy (unleveled senior elective english class)

Reccomendations:
Math Department Head (BC calc teacher) - has very high opinion of me and should give excellent rec
English III H teacher - likes me as a person .. didn't do to well in her class (got a B year avg). will prlly have a good insight into my personality though.
Counselor rec - idk too much of what the counselor thinks of me.. BUT she's writing her rec based on the recs which i'm getting from outside school which are - 1. TyE Business Competition Mentor and 2. MIT professor who i did an internship with (Both EXTREMELY strong recs)

Extra curriculars... (100 million over here). Listed in order of descending importance:

First High school level Bollywood A Cappella group which I founded in sophomore year (it's been 1.5 years (will be 2.5 when school ends). - Sophomore year thru senior year
TyE Business plan Competition - We spent a whole year formulating a business plan and we got 2nd place in the competition. I was the CFO... - Junior year
MIT RFID Lab internship - I spent the summer working in a lab with PhD students and the RFID dept head helping them formulate thesis. I may be listed as a co-author on these MIT students' theses (there are 2). - Summer before senior year

~Gap here because those 3 up there are the most important of the ECs~

Math Team - Captain Senior year - frosh to Senior year
Madrigal Singers - Senior year
Chess team -Freshman year to senior year - won 2nd place junior year. Senior year yet to be determined (predicted top 3)

So... how do i compete?

Thanks all!! and feel free to ask me to chance you as well. I don't know how well i'll be able to do, but i'll give my best effort.

btw i applied to CALS under the AEM major

class rank?

From my experience, it seems that Cornell has a predilection for your transcript over standardized test scores, so it could go either way. But aside from your GPA, the rest of your app is stellar. If your LoRs stress a more intellectual side to a rising trend in your transcript, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

I hope you applied to Penn; PennMasala may be your calling…

Thanks Honorlions,

Lol they were my inspiration to create a group. Too bad they outright rejected me ED this year LOL. ah well. i guess i didn’t fit the uPenn mold

@grace: my school does not report class rank

I think you have a very good chance! I had a 3.7 GPA and lots of extra curriculars and got in ED this year. I also took multi and had around the same course load! Good luck

I think you have a good chance, although as you are aware GPA could be a deal breaker.
BTW. I don’t see how you can claim to be be a “National AP Scholar” as that requires a score of 4 or higher on 8 APs or more.
According to above post you have only taken 4 thus far.
With only 4 AP exams under you belt, the highest achievement you can claim at this point is “AP Scholar with Honor”-
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

Just wondering, you are indian right? Your SAT score is quite amazing!! Which school are you from? And how did you calculate your GPA? I am an Indian too and I get marked out of 100. Plus I have different grades for classes 9,10,11,12 and my transcripts do not have one overall percentage. They just show marks for all subjects. So I really don’t know what my GPA is.

As for Cornell, I think you have a pretty strong chance. Just write good essays.

@garggaurav: let me confirm that I am indian only by ethnicity, but american by nationality.

@collooker: I meant to include predicted Natl AP scholar. I have BC Calc, Comp Sci A, Physics, Chemistry, and US History already. I am taking Spanish, Stats, and Psych this year. That makes for a grand total of 8.
Lol yeah i know, gpa is severely holding me back. I wish i could have turned that around xD

bump
10char

I know you said your school doesn’t report rank but you must have some idea of what your classmates have. Do you think that puts you in the top 10-20th percentile? And more importantly where have other students with a similar GPA in the past gone to college?

EDIT: in addition from personal experience there was a student who was in the top 10% of my graduating class but more in the top 20-25th percentile range with a similar GPA and 2300+ SAT. Ended up not being accepted but got a guaranteed transfer.

I’m in top 20% definitely. Idk about top ten percent.
