Chance me/school suggestions-- will chance back!

I'm an Asian female attending school at Forest Hills HS in NYC. I'm an average student, SAT score was a 1700 (1080 CR+M). My GPA is probably somewhere around a (I'm not sure, transcripts weren't available for juniors) 2.9-3.0 (3.1-3.2 weighted). I'll have some time to bring the grades up, but I'm pretty sure they'll still be in the B range. I do a lot of volunteering and I am active in two clubs at school. I also have two internships and a part-time job in the upcoming school year (my senior year). I've also worked in my junior year and recommendation letters shouldn't be a problem for me.

My reach/target schools:

Ohio University (No, not OSU!)
Stony Brook University
UMass Amherst
SUNY Plattsburgh

Safeties:

City College (CUNY)
John Jay College (CUNY)
College of Staten Island (CUNY)

(CUNYs are all under one app, six schools per app. for one fee, for anyone who was wondering why I would apply to so many schools)

and then...
I'm not sure where Brooklyn College (CUNY) falls in the mix.

Thanks!

Brooklyn College seems like a reach but possible. A small percentage of Brooklyn C has your GPA but don’t leave it out too soon! Are you applying through SEEK or EOP? That might help a little bit of having an higher chance at Brooklyn C.

Thanks!

EOP, I feel like SEEK is basically a like City Tech being transplanted into a traditional 4 year school.

Oh and, I did some more research, you have a better chance with Buffalo State and/or Stony than you do with UB/Bing. As for Albany, you’re on the fence so it’s up to you to decide if you want to apply there. I’d suggest not applying to Bing, several of my friends from private schools applied there last year, they had 3.6-3.8 uw gpas and they had their ECs and part time jobs and recs and they didn’t get in. Bing’s too selective, even for students who are doing well with As and B+'s.

Thanks ! I’m still applying to Bing and UB, only because I feel that EOP can help to just barely get in even if it’s by a .1. Did your friends apply to Bing through EOP ? Because then it would help me even more to know whether or not to apply.

True! I forgot that you were applying EOP.
No, my friends did not apply that way, but in any case, applying EOP is beneficial and you should take the chance.

I can ask around in the next few days and see if anyone I know applied EOP to a more selective SUNY.

And yeah, EOP > SEEK. EOP is usually filled with people who show potential but wouldn’t be accepted by the college’s standards. SEEK has a few like those but some of the people in SEEK have extremely low GPAs and some don’t even read at a 12th grade level. But it depends on the person.

I don’t plan on applying through SEEK only because I know my GPA is not that bad and a few CUNYs like stats like mine. EOP seems more beneficial for me.

You’re doing well, keep me updated through the app/essay process : )

I know how you feel, it’s like you know that you have the potential, just not the best grades. It’s tough bc you can’t show the colleges exactly who you are (bc we know that that would be enough to get you either of us into any school).

I, personally, would hate to have to stay home and attend a CUNY. Nothing against the City system, I just can’t stay in one place for this long and not expect to be fed up by the morons I go to school with.

You will get into Ohio University. The school is trying to reach out to out-of-staters, which make up less than 10% of the population. Plus Asian female! Its not a reach at all, probably a match, if not safety. But definitely get your grades up and if you can get your SAT (math and CR) up 80 - 120 points, you have a decent chance at all of these.

Thank you @ Lewmin !

I was thinking of applying early action and writing the essay (I heard it’s optional).

Would that be a good idea?

Yes do early action. Find the name of the admissions counselor for NJ (its on their web) and make contact and show interest. OU is beautiful, but assuming you are from NYC, like I am, you will absolutely need to visit as it can be a big culture shock from what you are used to in the big apple. Its in the southern part of the state, not far from the West Virginia border and its far removed from any evidence of city life. But I do know students from here that really liked the school.

Lewmin, I wish I could “like” you post haha

Would it be a good idea for me to show interest/make phone calls/send emails and then once I feel like I have enough info, to send the AC a thank you card?
(it’s common sense to suck up to the AC handling your app lol)

bump, anyone?
