My current cal state GPA is a 4.07, however my SAT score is low at an 1180. I’m retaking it again in August however the math section is holding me back and I doubt I can score very much higher. Math scored a 530 while the reading section was a 650. My EL is a 4436 and I want to apply to be a business major at SDSU. It is my number one school but because its getting so selective, Im worried I won’t be able to get in. I live in California so it’ll be instate as well. Another option is San Jose State, which I’m a little bit more confident in getting into, but SDSU would be a dream if i got accepted. Can anyone chance me for both please? And, if I apply as undeclared to SDSU will I have a better chance of getting in?
An EI of 4300+ is competitive for both SDSU and SJSU. The CSU’s do superscore so they will take the highest SAT Math and EBRW score.
I would say that you look like a competitive applicant for SDSU and SJSU but increasing your SAT score will definitely help your chances. With the CSU’s, you will be ranked by EI and major so much will depend upon how you compare to the other Business major applicants.
All majors at SDSU are impacted including Undeclared, so no you will not have a better chance selecting Undeclared as your major. Apply widely so you will have many options. As you know all the top Cal states continue to see increasing numbers of applicants which translates to more competition.
Best of luck.
http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/ has SJSU impaction information, including links to past years’ thresholds.
http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultsfreshmen/index.html indicates that an EI of 4436 would have been admitted to SJSU for fall 2018 in any major except computer engineering (4700), computer science (4725), or mechanical engineering (4400 using modified EI that emphasizes SAT_M and gives 4376 for you). Some other majors were fairly close, such as biological sciences (4350), business accounting (4300), business finance (4300), software engineering (4200). As you can see from several years’ worth of data linked from the main SJSU impaction page, thresholds do fluctuate year to year.
You would then have to go through another admission process by college GPA to get into your major if you enroll as undeclared. See http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/admissions/transfers/gpa.html .
UCSC, CPP amd CSULB are other options.
