Chance Me, s'il vous plait :)

Gender: Female
Race: White
Location: NH
Grade/Age: Rising senior/16 (skipped a grade haha)

SAT Reasoning: 1970 total-770 reading, 550 math, 650 writing (1st attempt, major math studying before fall retake! I hope to go up at least 50 points on both math and writing)
GPA: 3.5 UW (on an upward trend!), 4.4 W
Class Rank: Top 5% out of 450

Courseload:
APUSH 10th, AP French 11th (unprecedented at my school), AP English Lang. & Comp. 12th
All avaliable Honors classes, except for college prep Trig and Precalc (math is my biggest weakness). Other than 3 math classes (2 were during a significant period of time-see Other), I have all A's and B's with a solid 92 average, on a 7 point grading scale.

EC's- (some are repeats because they fit in multiple categories)

Leadership:
Officer- National French Honor Society, President
Stop Spending Our Future (a financial awareness and responsibility group), founder and president
Activities- week-long Leadership & Ethics program at Georgetown, America's Promise Youth Alliance Network selective conference for youth leaders (requires 4 major projects within my community)

School:

National French Honor Society, 3 years

Key Club member 1 hr/week

Honors and Awards:
Excellence on PSATs, two years
National Merit Scholar (final ranking TBD)

Other:
I had a significant slip in grades end of sophomore/beginning of junior year. This is due to a difficult personal struggle- after consistent major depressive episodes and multiple panic attacks that kept me out of school, fall of '08 I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and an EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified). 1st semester of junior year alone, I missed over 30 days of school due to a lengthy hospital visit, numerous doctor's appointments, and everyday trials related to my mental illness. I am currently medicated and seeing a psychologist and psychiatrist on a regular basis.
Is this something I should inform colleges about? I want to explain some of my low grades, but how much detail should I go into?

Possible essay topics:
The incredible experience I had at Georgetown, not only the heavy thinking that was required but the opportunity to meet motivated students from around the world and the college experience that I got from staying in a dorm and attending lectures, etc. Is this too cliche?
My struggle with bipolar disorder and an eating disorder, and the positive way that it ultimately affected me, what I learned, and the relationships that changed in my life. Too controversial?
For the colleges I will apply to in D.C., my specific experiences in the city, what I love about it, the opportunities that I will gain from it (I can personalize these to each school). Too broad/boring?
I'm bouncing around other ideas, also it will depend on the specific essay questions from each school.

Background info:
Public school, the majority of graduates end up at our state school (UNH) and we consistently do not meet government competency tests. We offer only 7 AP courses and Honors classes are available only for math, science, and English. However, my grade has a number of highly competitive students, much greater than any recent classes.

Schools: (12 total, I'm trying to narrow this down to 10)
I want to major in International Relations, with a possible minor in Journalism depending on which school I attend.
No.1 choice- George Washington University
No.2 choice- American University
Obvious reaches- Johns Hopkins, Georgetown
Obvious safety- UNH
Others (unsure)- UVA, NYU, University of Richmond, BU, Trinity College, Unversity of Delaware, University of Maryland: College Park

bumpbumpbump! :)

I think you have a good shot at GWU!

Yay! I visited it a few days ago, I thought the lack of campus would be a turn-off, but it really wasn’t as bad as I expected. With the Mount Vernon campus too, I think it’ll be perfectly fine. The D.C. location is ideal too…The Elliot School of International Affairs is right across from the State Department!

Thank you!

I would say you are definitely in at American, and you have very good chances at GW, especially since you’re in the top 5% of your class! Good job! I would say you would even get into one of your reaches if you get your SATs where you said you wanted them to be. I would however strongly advise you to take some SAT 2’s. Wherever you aply early will probably waive whatever requirement they have (although you should look into it), but other schools will require you to have 2 usually, and at Georgetown you need 3! Good luck, and chance me back?

I’m taking the SAT Subject tests for Chemisty, US History, and French. I took AP French and AP US History so hopefully that will help me out some.

And yep I’ll chance you!

bumpbumpbump x2!

I am thinking about applying ED to George Washington, but I don’t know if that will put me at a disadvantage when it comes to my financial aid package (which will need to be pretty good, seeing at it’ll be 50k a year). Any insights?

I think that GW’s financial aid is notoriously bad, especially ED, maybe try something else ED

Ahh bump! x3

What do you think my chances are at the other schools I’m considering?
UVA, NYU, University of Richmond, BU, Trinity College, Unversity of Delaware, University of Maryland: College Park

I haven’t visited any of these, they’re solely based on if they have what I need, location & size, the superficial stuff.

I think you have a great shot at all of these schools, especially GWU and American. I can see your commitment to your EC’s right off the bat, and you can definitely explain your slip in the grades… I think they’ll understand!

Okay, thanks  I’ve been stressing out over college so much this summer, it’s nice to have some positive feedback and reassurance because honestly I’m kind of going through this process on my own, so I never knew where I stood, chances-wise.
