Other:
I had a significant slip in grades end of sophomore/beginning of junior year. This is due to a difficult personal struggle- after consistent major depressive episodes and multiple panic attacks that kept me out of school, fall of '08 I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and an EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified). 1st semester of junior year alone, I missed over 30 days of school due to a lengthy hospital visit, numerous doctor's appointments, and everyday trials related to my mental illness. I am currently medicated and seeing a psychologist and psychiatrist on a regular basis.
Is this something I should inform colleges about? I want to explain some of my low grades, but how much detail should I go into?

Possible essay topics:
The incredible experience I had at Georgetown, not only the heavy thinking that was required but the opportunity to meet motivated students from around the world and the college experience that I got from staying in a dorm and attending lectures, etc. Is this too cliche?
My struggle with bipolar disorder and an eating disorder, and the positive way that it ultimately affected me, what I learned, and the relationships that changed in my life. Too controversial?
For the colleges I will apply to in D.C., my specific experiences in the city, what I love about it, the opportunities that I will gain from it (I can personalize these to each school). Too broad/boring?
I'm bouncing around other ideas, also it will depend on the specific essay questions from each school.

Background info:
Public school, the majority of graduates end up at our state school (UNH) and we consistently do not meet government competency tests. We offer only 7 AP courses and Honors classes are available only for math, science, and English. However, my grade has a number of highly competitive students, much greater than any recent classes.

Schools: (12 total, I'm trying to narrow this down to 10)
I want to major in International Relations, with a possible minor in Journalism depending on which school I attend.
No.1 choice- George Washington University
No.2 choice- American University
Obvious reaches- Johns Hopkins, Georgetown
Obvious safety- UNH
Others (unsure)- UVA, NYU, University of Richmond, BU, Trinity College, Unversity of Delaware, University of Maryland: College Park
