Chance me so I can sleep peacefully

<p>Hi,</p>

<p>So I am going to apply to colleges of engineering for all of my schools (specifically biomedical engineering):</p>

Umass Amherst (in state)
University of Texas: Austin
University of Michigan
UPenn
MIT
Northeastern University
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Case Western Reserve University</p>

<p>Asian Male Resident of Westwood, MA

SAT II Chem: 720
SAT II Math I: 720
SAT II Math II: 760
SAT II Physics: 640 (screwed this one up...)</p>

<p>EC/Volunteer:
-Internship for two summers at Harvard Medical School in the New Research Building (Summer of 11th,12th)- Did mostly computer stuff (installed servers, software, hardware, etc.) to help in research for the Humane Genome Project
-Began a branch of Akshaya Patra in Massachusetts (11th, 12th) - Akshaya Patra is an organization which gives free food to underprivileged kids in India
-National Honor Society (11th, 12th)
-Academic Decathlon (10th, 11th, 12th) - won award for speech in statewide competition
-Science Team (10th, 11th, 12th)
-Key Club (9th,10th,11th,12th) - Recently elected as Vice President
-Percussion (9th, 10th)
-Religious (Jain - props to anyone who's heard of Jainism) Education (9th,10th,11th,12th)
-Created advertisements for nationwide Jain phonebook (summer - 9th)
-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (9th) – Educational Studies Program - I went to MIT every Saturday for 10 weeks and took classes in Economics, Debate, and How to start a high tech business
-Selected for and attended Boys State (11th)
-Leadership Development Program (summer - 9th) - I helped organize games and take care of little kids
-Minuteman Press School (Summer of 12th) - I learned about printing and marketing (my parents started a printing business and Minuteman Press is a franchise, so we all went to this school for 2.5 weeks and learned about how to start the business, how to price jobs, how to print on a press, etc.)
-National Honor Society (11th, 12th)</p>

<p>Sports:
9th - Soccer, Ski Team, Outdoor Track
10th - XC, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track (letter)
11th - XC, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track
12th - XC (letter), Indoor Track, Outdoor Track</p>

<p>Recommendations:
I'm definitely going to get good ones from my GC, my math/computer science/engineering teacher, and my english teacher</p>

<p>My predictions:</p>

<p>Boston University (sister attended..not sure if it helps) - Accepted
Northwestern University - Rejected
Rice University - Rejected
Umass Amherst (in state) - Accepted
University of Texas: Austin - Deferred
University of Michigan - Rejected
UPenn - Rejected
MIT - Rejected
Northeastern University - Accept
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Deferred/Accept
Case Western Reserve University - Rejected</p>

<p>Thanks for helping me out!</p>

<p>BU- slight reach
NW- reject
Rice- reject
Umass- In
Texas- reject
UMich- reject
UPenn- reject
MIT- reject
NE- slight reach
RPI- reach</p>

<p>Boston University (sister attended..not sure if it helps) - Accepted (for sure)
Northwestern University - Rejected (Yeah....)
Rice University - Rejected (Yeah.....)
Umass Amherst (in state) - Accepted (for sure)
University of Texas: Austin - Deferred (Probably. UT Austin is getting a ton of Texan applicants. I think you have a decent chance but.... 30% favorable.)
University of Michigan - Rejected (Disagree. I think you have a decent shot. 60%)
UPenn - Rejected (Probably. Ivies are too selective, and I don't think they could see past your GPA)
MIT - Rejected (Probably. MIT's intense.)
Northeastern University - Accept (90% favorable)
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Deferred/Accept (Agreed. I think you have a 80% chance of acceptance.)
Case Western Reserve University - Rejected (don't know very much about this school)</p>

<p>If only your GPA were better, I think you could totally get into some better schools. Either way, you're sure to get into some better schools than (this is the standard in my school) Arizona State.</p>

<p>what's with people who say "Ivy's"</p>

<p>that's the same as saying "Ivy is"</p>

<p>how you get a 680 in writing and make that type of a mistake is beyond me</p>

<p>Ha ha. Well, I guess the correct one would be Ivies? </p>

<p>Yeah. My bad. I'll change that now.</p>

<p>3.18 unweighted is extremely lousy, unless the highest GPA in your grade is 3.2...</p>

<p>Plus you're an Asian male, the two worst attributes for you to have as an applicant.</p>

<p>Boston University (sister attended..not sure if it helps; it does not help) - Maybe
Northwestern University - REJECT
Rice University - REJECT
Umass Amherst (in state) - In
University of Texas: Austin - Unlikely
University of Michigan - REJECT
UPenn - REJECT
MIT - DEFINITELY REJECT
Northeastern University - Likely/ In
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Maybe
Case Western Reserve University - Maybe</p>

<p>thanks a lot for the responses...are there any colleges that you can recommend to me that have respectable engineering programs and possible matches for me?</p>

<p>bumpitybump</p>

<p>Georgia Tech</p>

<p>bumppppppp</p>

<p>bumpbumpbump</p>

<p>i think ur ECs are great..but ur GPA is not</p>

<p>bumpybumpp</p>

<p>anyone else please???</p>

<p>As everybody is saying, your GPA is a problem ... do you have an upward trend?
Since you say about 5 kids go to Ivies in a given year, are you one of the top five?</p>

<p>i do have an upward trend but I am definitely not one of the top five in my class. My school does not rank, but I am probably in the top 20% of my class. Also, after second term this year my GPA should go to at least a 3.2, maybe a little higher.</p>

<p>That's still too low for those schools unless you have a CRAZY hook.</p>

<p>yea i know I'm going to get rejected by most. I was hoping my EC's + ACT would help my case a lot. Any schools you can suggest that are within my GPA range?</p>

<p>I am looking for a school in the city, mid to large size, and not too far south</p>

<p>By the way, I really want to know if I could get into BU, RPI, and Case because those, in my opinion, are high matches. What do you think?</p>
