admissions essays are pretty stellar (being reviewed multiple times by two english teacher both with a master's degree)

I’m so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately your stats are a little low for Mich, which make it a reach for you. Sometimes the ACT can pad the lower GPA a bit so getting your score up can really help! Your ec’s are ok, but they lack leadership roles/positions. If your essays are as stellar as you say they are they can be a huge helping point! Admissions at U of M are really unpredictable but if you can make your overall application very compelling there’s always a chance!

Are you applying to MSU also? You should get in there. Also check with both schools on residency status (and check with any Indiana schools you are interested in).

My friend got a 24 and I just went home for Thanksgiving with her! She was, however, valedictorian with a 4.0 at her HS. If you write really good essays, you should have no problem. I’m Asian as well but I felt like my essays were the reason that got me into Michigan (and hers were really good as well!). I basically showed them I wasn’t the stereotypical Asian applying to their school lol.
Best of luck!

@midwestbandie yeah i’m studying and practicing like crazy for the ACT, currently hoping to score a cumulative 30 maybe? I’ve only taken the ACT once (the one listed). And I’ve seen a couple of other forums, notably the class of 2018 umich regular admissions one with over 300 posts on it, and UMich’s admission seemed pretty random in terms of people’s GPA/ACT scores, where some people with stellar scores didn’t get in or got waitlisted. A lot of what I read also said that they think the admissions just look at the scores and GPA because they got in with not-so-hot essays, but this confused me because everywhere I see UMich admissions process they say it is “holistic”; how confusing.

@wayneandgarth i feel i’ve seen your username on other UMich forums, not 100% sure. And, yes, I am applying to MSU (and IU Bloomington) just in case i don’t get into UMich.

@productrule hello, fellow non-stereotypical asian! For my essays, I’m pretty much elaborating on my story of this year with my mom’s loss and my move to michigan, also how it inspired my desire to stud in the medical field. They’re being reviewed with a fine-toothed comb. I also incorporated a little wit into them, but not trying to overdo it; i read on some sites that putting a little bit of smart wit into the essays will make the essays more enjoyable and prominent to the admissions office. And i’m trying really hard to get my GPA up, since UMich seems to consider GPA more than test scores.

Hey! Michigan in-state applicant and 100% Asian here too! UMich is also my dream school. I think you have a good chance of getting in if you have good essays and get that ACT score up at least 2-3 points. Being first generation helps a lot. I’m also really sorry for your loss. Best of luck to you, hopefully we see each other there!

Chance me back please:

I agree with the other posters. I believe that you will need a higher ACT score. I took mine today too! If you get a 32, then that’ll make up for a good chunk of the GPA. I think you have really good ECs. It will all ride on how good your essays are. Make them the best you’ve ever written!

Chance back? Thanks
