Chance Me! SPS, Episcopal and hopefully more to come...

Well this is my first time on the chance boards, I was rejected from about 5 schools last year and waitlisted at two but not accepted to either, so I'm chancing here to figure out what I need to improve on.

I am 14, African American, middle-class and currently a freshman in the Humanities magnet program applying for sophomore year. So my grades since 6th have always been Honor Roll, with ranges of no B's-3 B's. Never any C's, and I always make sure I have more A's than B's.

I've taken the SSAT 3 times, my first time was last year applying for 9th and my score was about 78%, it decreased this year when I took it in October and I took it in December, I pray that my scores have surpassed my expectations to 89+, but I won't know until they arrive via the dreaded snail mail. I am currently taking Gym, Spanish 2A, Honors Geometry, Honors Biology, Humanities English, Humanities History and Critical Humanities.

EC'S: (I see everyone's ec's on the Chance Me board and feel inadequate because of how dedicated everyone is, but i'll just put mine here)
Piano for about 4-5 years, not consistently though
field hockey for a few months
but i'm also doing indoor field hockey every monday from now until february, and tournaments on some weekends
volunteer at the Special Olympics every summer
In the Gay/Straight Alliance and Anime Club at my school, going to join the Independent Film Club and HERO club
My piano teacher also asked me to perform two pieces at the next recital, if that makes a difference

-I also know that I need rec's from my math, english teacher's and a personal rec, which will come from my current piano teacher. My English teacher is awesome and incredibly nice, she will definetly hype me up even though she said she'll miss me if I go :D, my math teacher doesn't know me very well, he just knows that I'm not a troublemaker or a big talker, but I'll just hint to him that this rec is very detrimental to my entrance. My piano teacher will write me a great rec, I'm almost positive.

We're also applying for partial financial aid this time around as well, my parents let me know that the school we choose could be based on how much aid they provide.

Aww, are my chances really that bad?

bsroxmysox,

Your chances are definitely good. You have to believe that you can. I’m applying to Ehs(a year younger) but you are good. As an African American that only helps your chances. Are you applying for aid? Since you took the test that means you applied to those schools last year too right? You should be fine, just make sure you have the best interview, and essay possible. And believe in yourself, because if you don’t than who will? I think you can do it!

OOPS just saw that you are applying for partial financial aid.

^Oh, you mean!^ But seriously, safeties. GET THEM. And really don’t expect to get FA. They really like to accept you and then say you don’t qualify, even if they like you enough to give you some. It’s sad, and you can argue, but still an unfortunate truth. Maybe go somewhere with Merit Scholarships?
