[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): ... nothing really ... I'm well-rounded, but Stanford told me that's a bad thing? No particular super-strengths I guess.

Stanford = high reach (top 3% may not be high enough unhooked and no stand out EC’s (although overall they are very good); Chicago = low reach (maybe 33 - 50%, but a lot will depend on the essays).

You have a good shot at Chicago. Where else are you thinking of applying. Just my thoughts but yous trike me as very intellectual and might like Columbia (shot if apply ED), Reed, Macalester, Carleton, Oberlin

Like what the person before me said, I think Stanford is a reach for you. Although you have strong grades and test scores, you do not have “extraordinary” ECs so you won’t really stand out from the other people applying with basically the same grades and test scores. Yeah I think you have a good shot at Chicago. Some other schools you could look into are UPenn and Brown. Good luck!

Thank you guys so much! I know Stanford is really really really high up there. But the positives of UChicago you listed made me super relieved. I don’t really have a solid list of colleges together (basically they’re in order by due date and if I hear back from a college before sending out other apps, I probably won’t send them. I’ve started/finished apps from John Carroll, University of Alabama, Ohio University Main Campus (safety schools), Pittsburgh, USC, NYU, University of Glasgow, and Jacobs University of Bremen (I think these are sort of midway type schools given my stats based on other things I’ve read, but I’m not positive), and Rice (last reach school). This could definitely change very soon depending on the intel I get :P

You’re going to write about a Caesarean section…

Please have multiple people proofread that essay. Some people might be a bit squeamish so not sure if it’s appropriate. Think about the essay as a conversation with a random, friendly adult that you meet. Would you be comfortable talking to them about a Caesarean you saw? Would they be comfortable listening to you?

I can see the symbolism/stroke of brilliance/apotheosis, just be a bit careful is all I’m saying. I think it could be great if you pull it off!

Will they learn about you from the essay? U Chicago is not a 50% chance! You need more schools between Chicago and the ones you listed. Kenyon?

Johns Hopkins?

Wilsun007, I have has a lot of proof reading done and I don’t think it’s too squeamish (I don’t go into intricate detail lol). It’s supplementary I think to my major choices (neuroscience/biochem./premed) and delves a little bit into fate (it was literally the most random thing ever… I mean I was in a foreign country, knew only like my host family and still got to shadow an anesthesiologist for a day… It was so cool  ).

I’ve looked at John Hopkins a bit, but unfortunately (from the reps I’ve talked to) pre-med is a little out of my reach because they have such a load of pre-med students (even if their majors are something else, the pre-med required classes are packed) and I don’t have a strong internship or doctoring experience at this point. Unfortunately, I made my decision a little late for that sort of thing…

As for Kenyon, I don’t know much about it except that the guy from How I Met Your Mother (love that show!) went there and filmed a movie recently there as well :stuck_out_tongue: I guess I need to do more research! :)

[please don’t judge me for typos! This is on the mobile app!]

Wilson600, I think they will learn a lot about me  also do you think UChicago is too much of a reach? If so, is there really anything I can do at this point? If not that’s alright, I guess it’s not meant to be :stuck_out_tongue: but after seeing some UChicago presentations I just have to say I love the intellectualness and ideology of their campus!

Chicago depends on the essays. It is the one school where SATs matter less than others, although interestingly their SATs are still very high. That is why I said 33 - 50% with really good essays. With avg essays, a true reach. Still, give it a shot. My son had similar stats as yours and got wait listed and so you are definitely in the realm. Like the Kenyon suggestion also.

“Awkwardly bumping my own thread…” :P

For Chicago, I recently visited, got in reach with my regional admissions officer and have gone through 3 rounds of editing with the essays (with more on the way). I don’t honestly know much about Kenyon, but I have looked at their common app supplement and might consider applying after a visit or some feedback or something?

Bummmmp? I’ve just submitted apps to: UChicago, Stanford, Rice, University of Pittsburgh, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, Ohio University HTC, and John Carroll University and their honors program, as well as University of Glasgow. Other universities I’m thinking about: NYU, USC, Vanderbilt? Also anyone using the college confidential app… Isn’t the whole “open advanced options” thing getting in the way of typing incredibly annoying???

Bump…?

Bump. Bump … Bump. Bump

I still say Hopkins, say you want to be a science major.dont have to have a doctor job. Wash u in st Louis Boston College

If it weren’t for your ACT I would have said no chance. Weak course load (Calc AB senior year), mild AP scores, mild EC’s. The foreign exchange to Germany is impressive. Hope your essays really stand out if you are serious about UChicago.

Stanford - Reach
UChicago - Reach but definitely attainable with outstanding essays

Swarthmore would be good for you. Wesleyan

Wait, you applied early to both places?

Sent from my SGH-T959V using CC

Your ACT is totally solid! And your GPA looks fine too.
You have so many ECs, but they lack the depth :expressionless: But still looking at your profile as a whole, I think youre a competitive candidate !
Stanford is UNPREDICTABLE. but I think if you apply to NYU you’re pretty much in. I also think you have solid chances at UoM-Twin Cities and Pittsburgh.
No matter what may happen youll go to a great university!
So keep your spirits up and All the best!

Also, chance me please?
