Cornell and Dartmouth (just to entertain my curiosity, lol)

Just wondering what those of you out there think about my chances :)
I'm a high school junior.

White / Male / Out-of-state to all, probably not applying for financial aid

GPA: 3.92 (W), 3.73 (UW)

Rank: School doesn't rank, but at least top 15%

SAT: 720 CR, 700 M, 680 W (2100)

ACT: Haven't received my results yet - Feel confident that I did well.

SAT II: 720 Lit, 650 math 1, 640 US history (second two i probably wont submit)

APs: Jr. year - AP Lang, AP US H, Accel Latin (6th year course)
Sr. year - AP Lit, AP World H, AP Latin, AP Stats

Other senior year courses: Honors calc, honors physics, high-level band
Other school curriculum: I've only ever taken honors / accelerated courses. APs are not allowed sophomore year except for APUSH (2 year course) and I took that.

Co-curriculars: Heavily invested in music and theater
In NHS, swim team, acapella, pep band, taking clarinet lessons, taking piano lessons, teaching clarinet lessons, tutoring, AFS

Honors / leadership:
Programs chair for Drama Club (9-10)
Secretary of Drama Club (10-12)
Officer for band (10-12)
NHS Secretary (11-12)
WordWright Challenge Champion (10)
School awards in band and english
International thespian society
Music awards / theater awards - probably not worth mentioning but there are a lot
Honor / high honor roll
Playing in Carnegie Hall / Strathmore Hall (Maryland)
International Honor Thespian (1000+ documented hours in theater / highest possible honor in HS Drama)

Recs:

They'll be good, but not ground-breaking. From my English and Latin teachers who I have great relationships with and are classes I succeed in. Also getting one from my Drama Advisor that should be my strongest one, he knows me very well and thinks highly of me. Good relationship with my counselor.

Essay:

Probably my strong point, to be honest. My GPA isn't anything special, and I don't have any one detail on my app that will jump out instantly, but my essays should be pretty great. Writing and creativity are my strong suits.

ECs are slightly subpar (except Carnegie Hall, that’s amazing!). The SAT is good and Lit subject test is good as well. Your GPA, in my opinion, will NOT be a deal breaker.

Colgate: Match
UConn: Low match/Safety
Lafayette: Match
Marist: Sorry, I don’t know this one :S
Northwestern: Depends, what program/major? Anyway I think It might be a reach
U of Richmond: Match
U of Rochester: High Match
Skidmore: Match
William and Mary: High Match/Low Reach
Cornell: Reach, but you definitely have a chance
Dartmouth: Reach

Could you chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1662523-i-know-that-stanford-is-a-crapshoot-for-everybody-but-do-i-even-have-a-chance.html</a> Thanks! :)

Out of curiosity, why UCONN OOS but no other state flagships? What is your state flagship? We are in state for UCONN, which most people at my son’s private HS are not at all interested in attending, though Honor’s program has some appeal for the price. It is a beautiful rural campus, with upgraded facilities. No way to get anywhere without a car, though many students have cars after freshman year. But it is not cheap even for in-state. Of note, my son’s GC gave similar list for my son for low reach/high target schools. Oberlin, Santa Clara, Hamilton, Bates, Brandeis, Colby, Wesleyan, Emory, Davidson are also on the initial list. Northwestern is probably the most selective of the non-ivy schools on your list and would be definitely a reach for my son.

@S2Stan‌ Thanks! Marist is my true super-safety, lol. Also, I just got my ACT scores back and my composite was a 31, if that adds anything to your assessments.

@barbfam1‌ My instate flagship is UMass, specifically UMass Amherst typically being recognized as the best state school that MA has to offer. Mass Amherst is a fine school, my issue with it is that ~50 kids from my school go there each year and it’s just so incredibly full of Massachusetts people and I’m looking for something new. I figured UConn was a similar, close option where I could potentially be in the Honors School and not be surrounded by people from the same place as me.

As an update, I got my ACT score back with a Composite of 31.

The 31 composite score translates into about a 2050. Your SAT is a little better, therefore, but not enough to make a radical difference in your admission prospects. Cornell and Northwestern are reaches, but worth a try. Dartmouth might just be a little too extreme a reach, especially for someone from Massachusetts. I agree with the other assessments above.

To OP - ok, sounds like your opinion of UMASS - Amherst is same opinion as my son has for UCONN. Also, my son does not want to be in a huge school, nor one completely rural area as he will not have a car at all during college. And UCONN would mean going to school with dozens of kids who he went to school with through 6th grade, when he left to go to private school. The advantage of UMASS for you over UCONN, other than cheaper cost, is the 5 college consortium that would allow you to take classes at Amherst College, etc. One of my daughters went to Smith and her favorite psych prof was based at UMASS and he occasionally taught at Smith, though she did not take advantage of taking classes elsewhere in the consortium.

Of course, if you are interested in a course of study offered at UCONN but not offered at UMASS (not sure what those might be…) then you can take advantage of a regional program that would let you pay in-state tuition for UCONN even though you are from MA. I do not know how this really works in practice though as I would imagine both schools have pretty comprehensive offerings.

@woogzmama‌ thanks, that helps! Yeah, honestly I had taken Dartmouth off of my list but every so often I get hopeful again. I probably won’t apply, especially since Northwestern and Cornell are reaches enough as is. Thanks for the input.

@barbfam1‌ Thanks, I actually didn’t know that and that is definitely a nice feature. There’s a chance I may switch out UConn for UMass, but I’m not sure yet.

I pretty much agree with the above posters, especially S2Stan’s predictions. I feel your application will be easily lost in the pile–unless your essays are amazing.

Apply to UMASS instead of UCONN. OOS UCONN is not worth the extra cost. If all else fails, you need to have a financial safety, one that you know you will get into and have financial aid at. Given the much lower in state costs of UMASS and the relative comparatability of the education at the two schools UMASS is the much better deal. Don’t worry about high school people going there. You won’t have to hang out with them after HS, and honestly in a school as big as UMASS, it won’t matter because you will meet PLENTY of new people, so don’t let that one factor deter you from applying

UConn: Safety, btw did you mean “Conn Coll” instead of “UConn”? Since Conn coll is in the same league as the other liberal arts colleges in your list. If you did mean “Connecticut College” then its is a match

Apply to both UMass and UConn and don’t forget about merit aid opportunities. UConn gave me so much merit aid that it ended up being cheaper than UMass in-state, so that’s a possibility.

Accepted to all of them but Northwestern. Apply ED there
