So my gpa is a 2.8 (83) and my SAT out of 1600 is 1000 but I'm retaking it. I do a lot of extra curricular inside and outside school. What are my chances?

The extra curricular will help. I think you have a pretty good shot actually depending on your major. If it’s something like English, computer science or math they’re accepting more students into the college than they have been a few years ago. Business and accounting seem to be harder majors to get into though. Nanoscience would be but it doesn’t exist anymore. Anyway I would say it’s about half way between match and reach.

Thank you… I feel a little better about my chances, however I’m thinking about majoring in political science or public policy… What do you think my chances are for that area?

Are you me? I have a lower GPA at 80 but have an 1100 on my SAT CR+M, ECs include Congressional Internship and i’m also looking to major in Political Science.

It’s hard to get a grip on SUNY Albany for me, Recent grads and current students who return to my HS always tell me how easy it is to get in but I get discouraged when I see the numbers.

Applications: 22,000
Average GPA: 91.4
Mid-Range SAT (CR+M): 1090-1240

That’s the admitted freshman profile for Albany straight off of their website. They have an acceptance rate in the lower-mid 40%s I believe (not sure though). Being in-state and having a lot of extracurriculars will help, and if you’re taking AP/IB/Honors/other college courses and they are bringing down your gpa a bit the college will understand and take that into consideration.

The freshman class has about 2,500 students but accepts a good amount more than that. Don’t stress too much about Albany; keeping yourself balanced and as stress-free as possible for the start of senior year will help you get an upward trend in your grades to give you a better shot by the time the application due date rolls around (unless you apply early action by November 15th, in which the university will notice you have significant interest in their school and may view your application less strictly with regard to the regular decision pool).
