Chance me Swarthmore -- I'll chance back

Hi, so I’m a rising Junior at a competitive high school near Philadelphia, and I want to ED to Swarthmore. I hope to double major in Bio and Econ. I’m also thinking about NYU, Boston U, Dartmouth, Williams, Haverford, and a couple of safeties.

I also have been working as a Tutor/Assistant at Kumon, and I am sure to get a glowing rec from my boss.
I’ve won 2nd at a Science fair, and have won a grade wide science award. I also hosted an exchange student from japan for a year, don’t really know if it will matter. Also a mentor to a middle school robotics team

Class Committee - All four years
Key Club - All four years
Ambassadors Club - Junior and Senior Year (My counselor is the leader, so I should get a good rec from her)
Math Club - Sophomore year on
Robotics - All four years. Leadership position given to me soph year. This is my passion, and I am deeply involved in the club, from advertising to fundraising. I volunteer in local robotics events. I have also helped formulate the business plan.
Japanese NHS - Junior Year on
NHS - Junior year on

I think I’m forgetting some things, but oh well. I’m an excellent writer, and am very well versed in global issues. I truly love learning and am profoundly curious, so I think I fit the mold of Swarthmore’s ideal student. I plan to interview as well.

That’s it!

Your list is a bit odd. You have a combination of big research universities and small LACs. Make sure you know what you’re looking for.

Swarthmore-reach; with ED, good shot
NYU-match
BU-low match
Dartmouth-reach
Williams-reach
Haverford-high match

Your chances are pretty good. Very solid GPA, good ACT particularly during Sophomore year - could get better. Your EC’s are nothing to be ashamed of but they don’t set you apart. Maybe you’ve done or will do some interesting things on the robotics club. You know an emerging field in Mfg. which I’m surprised more students don’t look into is “additive manufacturing” which is the 3D printing of very small precise parts in metal. This is revolutioning mfg. and all kinds of industries like dental, medical and aircraft mfg. Swarthmore is one of the top 5 LAC’s in my opinion. I would make sure to research carefully exactly what they look for in applicants. When you look at the Swarthmore scattergrams of admitted, waitlisted, and rejected students the pattern seems to indicate that they are pretty particular about what they are looking for

GPA and test scores are very strong and well within range for all these schools. You admissions decisions are going to come down to the strength of your ECs for the most competitive schools on your list. You have leadership in the robo club but besides that your ECs don’t demonstrate much leadership or initiative. There are two things you can do to fix this. Either (1) win an award or (2) start a club on your own. If you win an award because of your performance in an EC it demonstrates your skill in the field. If you start a club it demonstrates initiative and doubles as demonstrating leadership (because you’ll be the founder AND leader of the club). That being said, I would give you these chances now:

Swarthmore ED - low reach
NYU - match
BU - low match
Dartmouth - low/reach
Haver ford - low reach
Williams - reach
