5. Subject Tests -Math L2 - 800; US History - 740 (probably no re-take)

Extra Curriculars:

Sports-
1. Tennis (JV - 2 years, Varsity - 2 years); Best team in school history (not sure if this is worth mentioning)
2. Soccer (JV - 3 years, Varsity - 1 year); 6th place team in the county (not sure if this is worth mentioning)

Leadership-
1. Vice President of UNICEF Club (2 years)
2. Peer Leader (2 years) (Help 10 freshmen in their first year of high school)
3. President/Co-Founder of PascackVolunteers (2 years) (A club/organization/liaison service my friend and I started at our school, which is the main conduit for all other volunteer clubs in the district, which covers two high schools. The principal loved our idea, which is the main reason why he decided to make it district-wide).
4. Application Administrator (2 years). I was part of a programming team that helped to design and program an iPhone application for our entire high school (available on the App Store). I now filter posts that are made to the application.

Ordinary ECs-
1. Investment Club (3 years)
2. Debate (All 4 years) (Undefeated JV season junior year; won 3rd place team award @ the last debate)
3. Math League (4 years) (Invited to dinner meet 2x; only top 10 people at the club)

5. National Honors Society (2 years) (of course, lol)
6. Science National Honors Society (2 years); is this worth mentioning? Didn't do much here...

*The science clubs have nothing to do with my intended major, so I'm not sure if I should mention them...?

Volunteering (kinda lacking here?):
1. 125+ volunteer hours at a local blood bank by the end of the summer (telerecruitment and data entry and canteen)
2. I'll obviously get a few hours from NHS and tutoring before I submit my application.

Side passions-
1. Intermediate Programmer. Learned Javascript, HTML (and of course CSS), and I am in the process of learning Python, Java, and jQuerty (obviously not a whole new language, but it might as well be for what I'm gleaning). I will be skipping CP Java and going straight to AP. I highly recommend codecademy (an online learning website - FREE).
2. Own and manage an equity fund (with the supervision of my parents of course!).
3. Fluent Russian and conversational Spanish...

Summer activities-
1. TENNIS TENNIS TENNIS ALL THE TIME!! 1-5/1-6/1-7 almost everyday during the summer. I am also proud to say I was a part of the best tennis team in school history this past season.

-Brown

(Matches):
-UMich
-Boston College
-UNC
-UVA
-Emory
-Notre Dame
-Cornell (High match because I'm applying ED??)
-UCB
-UCLA

(Safeties):
-Syracuse
-NYU??
-Rutgers
-Penn State

I would REALLY love it if someone could evaluate my list of colleges. I'm really sorry if I come off as pretentious or arrogant, but its really hard for me to evaluate myself. Thank you so much guys (sorry for posting so many other similar threads)!

try to narrow that list down to:

1 safety
~4 Matches
~4 reaches

sure, but did I categorize those colleges correctly based on my stats?

bump to the top? I will try my best to chance back…

Hello! I’d agree with almost everything about how you classified you list, with the exceptions of Cornell (I’d say low reach) and NYU (match). Also, I’d call Stanford simply a very high reach, but not a joke. Your academic credentials certainly put you in the running there, though, of course, it will still be very difficult to get in.

Your application’s strengths include quite a few things. First of all, for most of the places you are applying to, your standardized tests are fine. If you can work your SAT test to a 2200, that’s even better, but your subscores are within the 25-75 percentile of the student body’s SAT scores at all of the schools you mentioned (except for CR at Stanford, which you are just slightly lower than). Also, you have a decent amount of leadership in your EC’s. Don’t worry about volunteer hours – colleges could care less about volunteer hours if you have another passion that you invest most of your time in. Colleges want you to pursue things that you are passionate about, and if volunteering isn’t one of them; well, than they are fine if you don’t spend a massive amount of time volunteering. Class rank is also superb, and your knowledge of foreign language is, too.

Weaknesses: This might sound a little confusing, because I just said you had good leadership in your EC’s, but, at the same time, they aren’t amazingly strong. Though the leadership is great, the amount of leadership and the type of activities you are doing are pretty standard for applicants to top schools. In other words, nothing makes you stand way out. With this said, I want to make it clear that this is not a weakness at the majority of schools you are applying to, but rather is only a weakness at the most competitive ones where EC’s can make quite a lot of difference (such as Stanford). Also, depending on your circumstances, rigor might be a problem for you when you are applying to the top schools. Having only 2 AP classes up until now might raise a few red flags at admissions offices, though it also might not. It really depends on how many AP’s your school offers and how many AP’s freshman, sophomores, and juniors take. If all of your peers have taken two or less AP courses at this point, you should be fine. But on the other hand, if there are multiple people in your class who have already taken 5 AP’s, having only 2 at this point might be a problem.

All in all, strong application. If you have time, I’d appreciate a chance back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1368810-chanes-hys-among-others-thanks.html</a> . Thanks! :)

Thank you so much Adodie, for your thoughtful chance. I chanced back.

Anyway, I’m hoping that if I don’t get into Cornell ED (which will be really disappointing), I’ll still be able to go to either UVA, Notre Dame, or Emory RD, which would still be pretty good. Thanks for the help!!

Updated List:

(Reaches):
-Columbia
-UPENN
-Northwestern??
-Washington University in St. Louis??
-University of Chicago
-Stanford (Superreach/joke lol)
-Johns Hopkins??
-Brown
-Cornell (ED)

(Matches):
-UMich
-Boston College
-UNC
-UVA
-Emory
-Notre Dame
-UCB
-UCLA
-NYU

(Safeties):
-Syracuse
-Rutgers
-Penn State

Anyone else??

No problem (and thanks for the chance back)! I’m almost certain you’ll get into either Cornell, UVA, Notre Dame, or Emory, and I expect you’ll make it into more than one of those. I also want to just make it clear, the main reason why I classify Cornell as a low reach is because it still is simply an extremely selective school, and not because of any particular weakness in your application. With that said, I think you stand as good of a chance as anybody, and, heck, probably a much better chance than the vast majority of applicants of getting in. Best of luck!

Thanks, you too!

UNC and UVA are NOT matches. UNC is extremely competitive for out of state applicants and is pretty equal to getting into Cornell and similar schools, if not more competitive. Same for UVA although it is slightly easier than UNC for OOS applicants. UCB is a reach too.

I guess I agree that UNC and UVA would be really hard to get into, but isn’t my SAT score in the top 70th-75th percentile for UCB?

bumpbumpbump

Bump10char

Oh I’m also interested in applying to Carnegie Mellon university. Thanks again guys!
