Chance me @ Thornton?

Yes, I know that they meet after auditions…but they cannot always convince the academic department to let someone in. My teacher knows where I stand but there is going to be fierce competition and he says it becomes more competitive each year.
Yes, I am going to retake all SAT’s and ACT’s… I am going to have a couple of auditions before my USC one, but I don’t want to be burned out for it.

True. They cannot always convince USC Admissions to let even a solid musician if the academics are deemed not up to par. That’s true of any conservatory within highly selective university.

Yes and that’s what I’m afraid of T_T I was thinking of taking online classes in hopes of boosting my GPA…would you guys recommend this? I’m going to talk to my counselor tomorrow but she hasn’t been very helpful in the past. I’ve had to do all of my research/counseling by myself.

No, online classes will not help your HS GPA … don’t do it. The only thing you can do is continue to get great grades next semester. Also, keep in mind that even if you had great grades and a fabulous audition, you still may not get it as it is very competitive. You should make sure you have several schools that you research and would be great school for you. On your grades, you may have had some dire circumstances or health issues, but you won’t get a pass if your grades were terrible for two years. The fact that your Jr. year grades is encouraging, so keep doing whatever you are doing to continue that streak.

OP, you are getting good advice here, so please listen to it. Do formulate a list of school with a couple of safeties, good bets and a “reach” school or two, but make sure that all of the schools are ones where you could be happy. Get the best grades you can in the fall and play a great audition, and from then on, it’s out of your hands… Good luck!

Yes, I’m applying to at least 10 schools and I have my safeties…but as I have established in the past, USC is my dream school. Since I’ve had straight A’s all of junior yr, will they see my upward progress? I’ll talk to my teacher about it and thank you all for your advice!

Life,

Congrats on the straight A’s Junior year. That is a great accomplishment. You seem to want someone to tell you that you can get into Thornton, which none of us can for sure. It is certainly possible that you can get into Thornton. The music people need to want to make the case to admissions that you can be successful academically. If the straight A’s are followed up by a strong first semester your senior year then I think you are giving them the ammunition they need particularly if the courses were challenging and you improve your SAT/ACT.

It all starts with making the people you audition for want to do that based on your audition and what they see in you as a person.

Things you do to prepare to succeed in getting into Thornton will serve you well at other schools and in life also, so it is not a waste of effort if you end up somewhere else. Do your best and you will likely have success somewhere. I, and I think others who posted above, wish you success in getting into Thornton, but also want you to relax your singular focus on Thornton a little since that doesn’t really do much but increase your anxiety level as you approach applying and auditioning.

USC does like to know when they are your top choice, so don’t hide that from them. Just don’t think it is the only place you can be happy or successful.

Best Wishes

I am hoping that they will see my improvement regarding my grades, and I’m hoping to have a stellar audition. I know that it isn’t the only place out there, but it’s my dream school.

I wish I could relax, though! I’m thinking about doing an interview…should I? I’ve heard that all you need to do is an audition, you don’t need an on-campus interview.

And again, thank you everyone for your kindness and support

I’m going to Thornton this fall to study piano performance. My GPA wasn’t that great - it dropped after sophomore year, greatly. My SAT’s were just alright; it’s definitely NOT a score where I would be admitted for other majors at USC. It may be a good idea to contact someone in the violin department who might be able to tell your skills. it’s also good to know a faculty member you know at the audition…at least for me, it made me relax at the site. I know that Colburn orchestras and ensembles are also REALLY good, so I’m guessing you are quite talented.

If you want to know my statistics for some examples, just message me. I wish you the best luck…and hope I’ll see you in Thornton in a couple of years!! :)

It’s funny how some GPA’s are really low and they are accepted and there are those who have the same problem who are rejected. Perhaps the audition is more important…or so I’ve heard. After I’ve finished my application I’m going to contact the dean of admissions and meet with her. Hope that helps :stuck_out_tongue: plus I think there is only so much the music department can do to stretch things!

Hello Lifeofsolitude?

USC is my dream school! I just auditioned this month, but I was wondering if you could give me your results?
Please send me a private message. I am VERY paranoid and I REALLY want to be admitted…
Thanks!

I think LoS matriculated to CCM. This thread is over a year old.

Hi, I go to CIM actually. USC is still my dream school and I am currently in the process of transferring. To be honest with you, Thornton has become more of a bet than anything. Let me send you a private message and I’ll tell you all about it.

A bet?! But LoS, we all want to hear. (Or PM me, too?)

Life,

Have you been notified of your admission? Transfer applicants receive notification on or slightly before June 1, 2013. The deadline for submitting a transfer application was February 1, 2013.
