Chance Me to a few schools? (Will Chance Back)

Hi guys,

I'm a rising HS senior, Asian male.
I go to one of the top ranked public schools in central NJ.
My school does some weird things with the GPA, but I have a 4.1 weighted / 3.6 unweighted with a very rigorous course load. All A+ grades in all AP classes gets you a 5.

AP Tests:
5 on US History, Spanish, World History, Human Geography (self studied that one)
4 on Physics B

Standardized Tests:
2250 on SAT (760 R, 730 M, 760 W one sitting)
35 ACT (35 on all sub scores and 12 writing sub score, one sitting)
800 on MATH II SAT II
770 on US HISTORY SAT II
730 on CHEMISTRY SAT II

EC's include:
Working at a Congressional campaign in New Jersey's District 5 for a man named Roy Cho. He's a Brown/georgetown alum and will write me a sterling recommendation.

Tutored Middle School students as part of a school district STEM outreach campaign (2 years)

Volunteer at local library, 100+ hours

Taught violin to Newark students as part of music revitalization program.

Sports:
Varsity Track as a senior
JV Baseball and Football for various time

1st section violinist in school Chamber Orchestra
Vicepresident of Spanish Club
Vicepresident of Weightlifting Club
Founder and President of Current Events for Students Club
Member of Academic Team (3 years)
Member of school creative writing club (3 years)
Member of school magazine (2 years)
Member of History club (2 years)

Also National Honor Society, but so is everybody else.

I'm looking to go brown early decision, where the Congressional candidate will recommend me and where I have legacy. Also looking at Dartmouth, Amherst, Northwestern, Boston College, Colgate?

If it helps, I was the first junior at my school to take AP Spanish as a junior and got a 5 on the test...

I think as a legacy you have strong chances for Brown. Your EC’s aren’t bad either. But Ivies are a reach for anyone, so make sure you apply to matches and safeties as well.
Your GPA is a bit on the low side for these schools, but if your class rank is high, you are stand a fighting chance.

Chance me back?

Bump

Wow you have very nice ties with Brown

Brown: Match (id expect you to get in)
Dartmouth: High Match
Amherst: High Match
Northwestern: Low Match
Boston College: Match
Colgate: Low Match

Thank you guys. I’m kinda scared my SAT is low and my EC’s aren’t super standout awesome. My GPA is top 10%, but I’m not sure that’s good enough nowadays.

Okay, this is my honest opinion.

Your standardized scores are great – don’t worry about them. Having a legacy is a definite boost in the ED round too. What you DO have to worry about is your unweighted GPA and extracurriculars. What caused the 3.6 GPA? Even while you were taking a rigorous courseload? School transcripts are the first and most important thing adcoms consider, so it seems to me that you are smart, but haven’t tried enough in class. Or maybe you have had extenuating personal circumstances that caused the low grades – let your counsellor explain that. However, if you have a high class rank, then it may just mean that your school is really really hard.

Again, your extracurriculars are pretty lacklustre. Apart from that congressional campaign and a few clubs, you don’t really have much. Try to start a nonprofit where you and a bunch of students who play musical instruments teach inner city kids for free. Or just do something that is unique and noteworthy.

Remember, even if you’re a legacy, you still need to have good stats and ECs to have a fighting chance.

Okay so this is all I have for now. Chance me back? <a href=“As an International Student, Do I even have a Shot at Georgetown SFS RD? - Georgetown University - College Confidential Forums”>As an International Student, Do I even have a Shot at Georgetown SFS RD? - Georgetown University - College Confidential Forums;

^ I agree,
in fact vice president of normal school clubs don’t really stand up when you are compared with so many students with similar stats.

Also the GPA 3.6 Unweighted doesn’t look good…

Thanks everyone

You’ll probably get in everywhere you apply. You have very high test scores and lots of solid extra curriculars. The only school that I’d say could be questionable is Dartmouth. You’ll definitely get in everywhere else. You shouldn’t have any problems with acceptances. Chance me back?

If you’re concerned about your SAT scores, don’t report them. Your ACT is great, so just report those. Also, you’re SAT II scores are competitive. Your GPA is on the low side, however, schools recognize that some HS’s are a lot more difficult than others. With legacy, I’d say brown is a low match (which is good, considering its a reach for everyone else). Best of luck

Thank you. The reason I’m stressing is because of all these superkids who post their stuff on CC; by that I mean 2390 SAT scores and EC’s that look like job resumes. I’m going up against them. Wouldn’t that make anyone scared?

^don’t worry.

Scores aren’t everything(but many things). Who knows if you could write better essays?

@rlee07928, I know its hard not to over analyze, but with an ivy league its best to plan for being rejected, and hope to be accepted. Their admissions are unpredictable and often confusing. There will be hundreds, if not thousands, of deserving students that get rejected. I think with your stats and legacy status, you have a big advantage over other applicants. Again, don’t report your SAT scores. Seriously, a 35 on the ACT with a 12 on the writing is unheard of. Fewer than 600 people a year receive a 36, and I’m sure even fewer receive a 35 with a 12 on the writing.

I think your ECs could be better, but they are still competitive with other admits. Grade look good and you have a decent hook. As with all top 20 schools, they are reachs for even the best students, but you look like you have a good chance! Good luck!
