My recommendations will be really good and my essays will be decent.

Do I stand a chance?

Hey I’m an out of state first-year here at Chapel Hill. Your grades are good, but to have a good shot I would say you need to play up your extracurriculars a bit (think of anything else you’ve done) and bring up your SATs above 1800. You don’t have many APs but I don’t know how many your school offers so I can’t speak to that. If you’ve taken as rigorous a course load as your school allows, then I’d say you have a good chance if you can raise your scores.

Hi! I took the only AP course offered to me during my junior year and I’m taking both of the APs offered to seniors. My SAT rose 130 points between my first and second test, so 60 isn’t too off I don’t think. Right?

I can send you some practice SAT tests, if you’d like! By doing some prep work, you can probably pull it up even to a 2000.

I’ve got an SAT prep book that I’ve been working in.

Okay, if you need some extra material, just let me know. I have TONS of materials I used for prep that helped me pull my score up about 250 points.

Agree with the other posters, I think you need more preparation on the SATs (1900 if rural, maybe higher in a more competitive county) and also make sure your extracurriculars sound a little more unique. Everyone just lists clubs they’ve been in.

I come from a fairly unrepresented area of NC. On my application I’m going into more detail about my clubs in stuff! Thanks for your help.

Do you think you could send me some of the material you have? I’d really appreciate it.

Yes, absolutely! My computer is being worked on right now, I should have it back by tomorrow, so I can send them sometime then. PM me your email address so I can email them to you!

Apparently I have to have commented 15 times before I can send a PM. Does it work if you PM me and then I reply?

I just PM you! See if you can respond.

It wouldn’t let me reply.

My ACT is a 26. I’m thinking about sending it in. Do you think that would increase my chances? I was thinking that since the instate and out-of-state middle 50 starts at 27 that if only in-state is considered that I would be in the middle 50. What do you think?

I’m not sure. I know that 26 isn’t a very competitive score for such a competitive University. If you think you would be able to increase your ACT more than you would your SAT, you could definitely consider that! I have even more ACT materials than I do SAT materials. I’m going to send you an email of some links for my SAT materials!

I’m not going to retake the ACT because I don’t want the admissions office to have to hold my application any longer than they have to. I’m also a first generation college student, so that’s something to consider. I got your PM but I’m still not able to reply. I would be willing to read your essay. Maybe PM me your email and then I’ll reply to that.
