Chance me to RD UPenn! I'll CB!

Co-Valedictorian at an ultra-comptitive high school
SAT: Math - 800, Verbal - 690, Writing - 670, SS - 1490/2160
My first SAT was only like a 2050
GPA: UW - 4.0, W - 4.67
ACT: 33
No SAT IIs yet but taking Math 2 and Spanish in December. Hoping for 800 Math 2 and 750ish for Spanish. Using Baron's to prepare.
Classes: 10 APs in total, not sending scores of the completed ones
The rest are all honors or required non-honors (theology, fine arts)
Never gotten a B.

ECs: An anti-bullying group that travels to smaller parochial schools to spread awareness.
Lacrosse (Varsity)
Football (freshman, then one year of varsity until i quit)
Bowling (Varsity...just as a joke for senior year with a ton of friends)
Spanish Club co president
Math League top scorer
Psychology Club
International Food Club (Representative)
Model UN

Leadership:
Student council (only 4 reps elected from each class a year)
NHS
Peer Mentor (hyper, and I mean HYPER-competitive, nationally-recognized program at my school in which I am charge of a group of freshman...only 12 men and 20 women are taken a year)
Retreat Leader
Math and Spanish Tutor

Other awards/honors:
Leadership retreat representative
Invite-only math competition participant (perform atrociously for your own amusement)
Spanish Student of the year* (FLUENT in Spanish...should help)
Peer Mentor (again)

Service: Over 100 hours on various activities (too many to post). One of which I was honored best teen contributor. I also organized a canned-food drive that raised about 55,000 cans!

Work Experience: Management Intern summer of Junior year at a small business.
...and then I worked at Target (lol @ how terrible that job was)

Recs: AMAZING. I got the coveted letter from our AP Lit teacher who writes incredible letters each year! My other one was equally as respected in the school. I haven't read them (damn waivers), but I'm sure they're both magnificent.

Hook: none

Common App Essay: Great, wrote one about my incredible, inspiring, and cherished grandmother that recently passed away last week (from cancer) and who completely changed my life. She single-handedly shaped my values of friendship, family, and what it means to live. Also, I wrote on her impact on my respect for women (please be a female officer!)

Weaknesses: I'm white (sad) and I come from a higher income bracket. Also, weak writing score on SAT I.

I'd apply to the college of arts and science. I'm just nervous because I match their stats now, but that includes the stats of the much more lenient ED selections.

SAT: average
Grades/class rank: good job. but being val won’t get you in.
SAT IIs: check
recs: check
ECs: average, maybe a little above.

I’d say you have a good shot, better than most, but I don’t see a tip factor that will get you into an ivy. You seem a little bit like a grinder. Idk, maybe your recs will push you in? I’d say low to mid reach.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1007132-chance-3-3-senior-year-ive-done-what-i-can-do.html</a></p>

Meh, I wouldn’t consider being white a weakness compared to being Asian -.-

ED selections are lenient o.o? Where’d you get that from? Colleges use the same standards for both D’s I think.

As for the bulk of your profile, your ECs look good with sports, leadership and academics all bundled up nicely. Your CR+M score looks good and hopefully UPenn won’t give writing so much weight. Your rank and grades are stellar and your recs seem good. I’d say you’ve got a good chance! For ivies I think it’s all about the essays and how you make the meaningful ECs stand out.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1027072-jhu-ed-chances-i-will-not-chance-you-back-because-im-arse.html</a>
(Plz disregard title)

i think you app looks good. As long as your subjective things are in order you’ll have a great shot.

Thanks all! I chanced you back!

And are you saying that my common app essay should stand out? The Y Penn one is hard to totally individualize, but I’m really just going to try to convey a sense of cogency and unquenchable desire to learn. I also, however, want to somehow show them I’m not a total nerd (because I’m not). I have an extremely active social life too. How can I show that too? It doesn’t really have anything to do with why I want to go to Penn?

hmm, I think as long as you make sure that the app just screams you and someone reading your application could really get an idea of who Truzzi is . I think the apps that are the most effective are the ones that readers can associate with. If you make your app very personal and true to yourself, I think you have a great shot.

Yes. Admissions officers don’t want to see academics in your essays. They already see that from your transcript. Write essays that allow them to understand who you are as a person and you should have a decent shot.

Mmmk. I’m a little worried because I had a bad first SAT and I think they get to see that. Maybe the upward trend will look good.

Also, as a junior, I took honors organic chemistry instead of AP Bio. Will they look down on that? The Ochem at our school is the most popular class and my counselor told me to definitely take it over AP Bio. My senior schedule is literally all AP though and my lowest grade is a 96 thus far.

i know its hard to say with a school like upenn, but you’ve done everything right pretty much (academic wise at least) and id say you have a great shot.

good luck! :)

you have a good shot if you can improve your sat you would have a much better chance though

I can’t take another SAT, but I’m taking the ACT one more time…we’ll see how that goes.

I don’t think I can make it all the way to April!

You look like a great candidate. You might retake the SAT just to have everything as strong as possible. Early applications are way up at Penn, looking like it just keeps getting tougher to get in.

Thanks all! I forgot to mention that I will be applying to CAS, NOT Wharton. That should help my chances a little.

Bump 10char

I say low-reach for you, a competitive applicant for sure. SAT score is good enough, good rigor, and solid GPA. Why are you not self-reporting AP scores though? Awards are fairly nice, and ECs seem to be above average imo. Good luck! :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1027620-brown-ed-chances-i-chance-back-2.html</a></p>

decent chances, ecs are a bit weak

You look very strong as an applicant. Just work on your writing and make sure you implicitly express how you would make a difference at this school. CB me Back!!! :)

Thanks guys! And for those that want me to chance back, could you please post a link?

It looks like you’ve got a really good chance, SAT scores are great, very very good GPA, and I especially like your leadership roles in the clubs, those are very important and will look great on your application. Good luck ;)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1031244-virginia-tech-chance-ill-chance-back.html#post1065885380</a></p>

Your SAT score and the rest of your application are incongruous  if you can get that SAT score up, then you’re very very likely to make it.
