Chance me to UCLA!!!?!?!!

I am a University of Illinois student looking to transfer to UCLA or NYU. My major is Economics.
my stats are:

3.59 college gpa
Volunteered with children with brain injuries
Volunteered in India
Study Abroad in London at Univeristy College of London
Muslim Student Assosciation
College Democrats
Film Club
Economics Club

I also have a unique story, where I was hospitalized the second semester of my freshman year in college, and I came back to school and got better grades and worked harder in extracurricular activites and so forth. So what are my chances.

Compare to my stats, u certainly can get into UCLA. My gpa is only 3.5 something, work 3 work-studies in the past, and have no volunteer or join club whatsoever. Dont even have a unique experience, yet still in.

GREAT EC’s, you’re out of state, so that works against you, sadly, but I’d say you have a moderate shot. :)

mysterious, whats your major?

I hate to be negative but I think the likely answer is no. Unless your grades were a 3.8+ after your hospitalization I think your GPA is too low for Econ. I had some pretty some pretty great EC’s (maybe just one tier under yours), got regents, completed lower div 1 year, and got declined for biz econ. They have similar admit rates.

my major is econ atm, but I didnt know about biz/econ when I applied to UCLA, so hoping somehow I can change my major tho I know the chance is slim…

The out of state acceptance rate to UCLA this year was 11%. You’re applying to one of the most impacted majors in the school with a 3.5 gpa. You’re most likely not going to get in.

maybe good recommendations and essays will help?

The average accepted GPA for the Econ major at UCLA was over 3.8. However, I think you still have a reasonable shot if you have good essays. I got into the Econ major at UCLA as did a bunch of other people on this board- its definitely doable. In any case, your volunteer work makes me believe you’re probably a good person so I’m rooting for you. You also might want to consider applying to a less competitive major for transfer applicants to improve your chances.

Profile of UCLA accepted transfers:

sophiar-uc’s don’t accept recommendations.

UCLA does not take recommendations and again, you are an out of state transfer so you have extremely low priority.

yeah… i think for most of the buz/econ, econ majors… the cut line was 3.8 this year…

unless you have strong back ups in other areas.

I would take summer school to boost up your GPA and work hard in the fall.

If it’s economics or bust I would apply with that but since it’s so impacted you’d have a much better chance applying for the math/econ major (highly unlikely you can switch though once you’re in).

But either way, you have a fighting chance so it’s worth a shot.

^
i agree

but still out of state… so no priority! but good luck anyways!

what would impress UCLA then? Does anyone have any suggestions?

To answer my own question, should I do something to show my interest in California or my desire to make it my home, as cheesy as that sounds. What I mean to say is should I do something to prove that I would establish residency in California if I was admitted to a UC and were to graduate or something like that, and I would benefit the state of California somehow?

You can’t really improve your chances other than to move to california and goto a community college. Otherwise you will have very low priority; Only 46 out of 402 people got in from out of state this year. Also, your gpa is severely below the average from econ which has an acceptance rate of 15%. Even if you had california residency and community college priority, with your gpa the chances would still be very low. Its unrealistic to think you’ll get into UCLA unless you goto a CCC and get a few semesters of 4.0s. There were people from CCC rejected this year from econ with 1 B.

I was rejected with 2!
