Chance Me: Top 20

Currently a junior, but I’m stressing over my chances for next year, and would appreciate some perspective
I’m looking at the Ivy league, Stanford, and all top twenty schools

School: Public, highly regarded
GPA: 94.4 (School doesn’t do class rankings or weighting)
APs: Will have taken 8 by end of junior year
SAT: 2320 single sitting, 2350 superscore
PSAT: 1520
SAT II’s: 3 800’s (Chem, World, Math 2) and 790 (Physics)

Extracurriculars:
Secretary of science olympiads
Vice captain of math team
Vice captain of academic bowl team
Captain of chess team
Columnist for the school paper
Involved in many more clubs (Model Congress, Debate, etc)

Work:
I do 14 hours of work for my family’s business per week
I tutor my peers and younger kids in math and history

Recs:
My english and us history teachers like me, but I’m not sure if I can get a good STEM rec

The top 20 universities are all very different. What do you actually want in a college? Come back when you have a list that’s not based solely on prestige.

@awesomepolyglot they want a college that is in the top 20. What they want in a college is not really relevant for chancing whether or not they will get in.

All of the top schools are long shots so no one knows for sure. You seem like a competitive applicant but our EC’s seem a little bland. I guess it depends on your essays and recs. You will probably get into at least one of your colleges.

@bksoccer7 OP said “all top twenty schools.” This is a broad list that includes many types of schools. OP won’t do well in admissions unless they have a legitimate reason for wanting a certain school.

Nothing extraordinary in your ECs. You need to improve those to have a decent chance at the top 20 schools

You are on a good track. Essays need to be great though

ECs are your weakness right now. Otherwise, you’ll make it in a couple of the top non Ivies for sure.
