Chance me? Transfer student

Current School: Pasadena City College
Current UC transferable GPA: 3.02
Applying for: Fall 09
Major: Psychology
School of choice: UCI
Applying to: UCI, ...... (suggestions?)

Hi guys I hope you can help me out here. I started out taking regular GE's in my first year, then I decided to major in animation on my second year of college but found that it wasn't for me. I am going on my third year to finish off my IGETC and lower division courses and changed my major to psychology. I had to drop my classes in the middle of my second year to work because my mom, the only working parent who does not speak English, was laid off after 15 years of service so I went full time to help out with the bills and rent (it was only temporary until my mom finds another job). It was tremendously stressful and I have quite a story to tell about that experience. Anyways income is a little steadier now and I am back in school. I am going to clear this on my personal statement among other things.

I think I can raise my GPA to an overall 3.4 and I was wondering if I am able to get into UCI? I called and asked about extracurricular but the advisors said they aren't as important. I'm taking the maximum units I can so I don't have time for any EC. And besides UCI, what other UC's should I apply to? I know UCLA will definitely laugh at me. I was told by my counselor I might have a chance with UCSD, but what else? Also, how can I heighten my chances to get in?

Thanks in advance!

with a 3.4, you'll be able to get into UCI. Just make sure you finish all the required classes and explain all your hardships in the essay.

And UCSB too.

what other UC's? I have 4 free choices.

All the schools expect UCLA and UCB

is UCSD as picky about finishing all prereq's like UCLA?

i think psych is kinda competitive at sd, might want ur gpa to be a little higher than that.... but its worth applying

nope, not as picky.

well my goal is UCI, but it'd be nice to get accepted at UCSD too.

how competitive is psychology at UCI? I feel a little discouraged.

anyone????

Try to boost your GPA

what the Bear said.. i dont know if it is competitive as UCLA's psych but i know quite a few people going for psych at UCI

Don't just look at which UCs you could get into, also look at which ones you like! The campuses are all different and the Psych departments are all somewhat different as well. UCSD has a very neuroscientific approach, for example.

If you can raise your GPA and show that some of your sub-par grades were because of adverse circumstances I think you could have a chance at UCLA IF you complete all of the pre-reqs.

Otherwise, the schools you have a very decent shot at are UCI, UCSB, UCR, UCSC and probably UCD. If you really wanted to try for UCB, UCLA and UCSD make sure you're doing well on your pre-reqs, get as close to all a's this semester as you can and have a stellar essay.

P.S. If you are low-income you can probably get a fee waiver for more than four applications. I think this is simply something you check off when you do your application.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Regarding stellar essays, I'm not quite the type to write shockingly amazing essays. But I've already gotten my 2 prompts finished up. Can I send them via PM to anyone who can help me revise and give me a critique? You can be as harsh as you want, just tell me how I can improve it. Thanks.
