I don’t think 3.61 is strong for a Pre-Med major, but don’t have experience so that is a guess.

Try looking at he ave. GPA for admission in to UCLA, which should be similar to Berkeley, to understand where you fit in your intented major: [Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2009 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof09_mjr.htm#CE)

Edit well, I was wrong. Looking at the link above, the ave. GPA of admitted Transfer Biology students was 3.65, very close to your 3.61. You’ve got a decent shot.

re: How to improve chances: as you probably know, the UCs are not allowed by State Law to consider Race/Ethnicity in applications. But they ARE allowed, and in fact practice quite vigorously, a preference for socioeconomic challenges: 1st Generation college, single parent home, low income, life challenges, etc. If any of those describe your situation in life, I’d make sure to highlight that in your essays and in the Additional Information section (if there is one) of your application.
