Chance Me: UCB /UCLA - post your stats here

I was thinking it might be a good idea to try and corral all the random chance me threads for UCB and UCLA to one location. :)

Ah, This post is making me nostalgic.

This will make my job a lot easier, thanks lol

I aim to please @cayton!

Hey all, I was just wondering where do you find your UC or major GPA? All I know is my overall, and for the other GPAs I’ve just made assumptions about what counted towards it but I don’t know if that’s what everyone else does or if there is something that tells them a precise number. Regardless, my numbers shouldn’t differ too much, I think.

Overall GPA: 3.86 (as of now)
Major/UC GPA: Unsure? But very close to overall
Major: Applied Mathematics (both Cal and LA)
Pre-requisites: Done by Fall for LA, need one more for Berkeley that I might take either in the winter intersession or spring (to clarify: not a needed course, says that it isn’t required for admission but I’m assuming taking it will boost my chances [?])
IGETC: Yes by spring if everything works out nicely…by this I mean that my situation is weird since I took courses at a 4-yr so I just need to sort things out with my counselor. If no, how much will my chances be affected…?
TAP: No
ECs: Very little (no job, minimal volunteering/tutoring, a few clubs that don’t really mean much?) :E which I feel will be my major weakness. Not sure about what the etiquette is for mentioning things we did in hs, because I have a few awards/activities worth mentioning from hs, not so much in college.
Extra notes: I was in UCI my first year and withdrew my second, doing it at a CC. Possible hook: LGBT student(?) I’m contemplating on whether or not I should include this in my app. I mean I know UCs, especially Cal and LA are liberal, but I just have that slight paranoia that it will deter from my app on the one chance that I get a homophobic admissions officer, or that they might see it as an attempt to stick out without any additional meaningfulness.

Thanks for making this thread!

@bearly calculate your major pre-reqs for your major GPA.

I think the LGBT is good. They like diversity.

Hmmm, no job or ECs. Try to add some volunteering, a club, although it’s a little late, so I guess it won’t matter much. Have you been involved in any LGBT-related causes? !!!

Your GPA is good, so all in all you should do OK. But it’s a tough major, no? We have all seen these level GPAs not make it. Anything you can do to make yourself more solid would be good. Off the top of my head, I think LGBT could be a very strong add.

I thought only UCLA looks at major GPA

@Bearly‌
Shoe in. Math has a low average GPA and not many apply for math.

Good news @CSB111‌ !

I’m going to have to agree with @CSB111. I think you’ll get in, Bearly!

Oh that’s great to hear! Should I even bother to try to do more ECs? My ECs feel weird/uncommitted especially because I moved colleges, so it’s like just one year of something and a second year of something else for college ECs. And lastly what’s the say on putting stuff from high school on a transfer app? Maybe not stuff you did your freshman year, but perhaps senior year and beyond (senior awards, AP honors [if those have any value]?)

Well ECs matters, but they’re not as important for transfers, and I believe that you can list ECs you’ve done since senior year. A lot of people do that.

My ECs weren’t extensive either and I got in at UCLA and Berkeley(I’ll assume these are your top schools since you have the grades and you’re posting in this particular thread). My major was unimpacted, like yours, so that helped.

I agree with cayton on this, even tho I am a believer in ECs. You’re applying in a couple of months. They’re going to see through any sudden list that was not there until application time. You prob have some EC with LGBT. Just throw that in. It will show some community interaction. Esp as a math major, I think it would help to show you are socially engaged with people.

But your GPA is really good based on the major’s avg GPA cited by bearly.

One other thing I’m going to say: I went to Berkeley and I live in the Bay Area. LGBT is like a rallying cry around here. You know, it’s like those old bumper stickers, “I brake for LGBT.” Same with UCLA. It’s the cause du jour. I don’t mean to compartmentalize it like that, but you know what I mean. It will not work against you.

I agree with @lindyk8‌

UCLA and Cal are pretty LGBT-friendly.

They’re both among the top 50 LGBT-friendly schools in the nation.

Can anyone chance me?

GPA: 3.55
EC: Work history, Math club, and some awards to go with it.
Personal Statement: I think I can write a really good personal statement. I am also a member of UCB’s TAP, so I am certain that I can write an excellent PS with their help.
Major: Operations research and Management science
Miscellaneous: I have 11 W’s

@ktgamgam, are you a high school student? It seems that way since your GPA is weighted.

Anyways, I really think you’re going to make it, because of your well roundededness. I advise taking the SAT again just to increase your chances of getting in
