Chance Me: UCLA, USC, UT, UNC-CH

I'm a rising senior and am just kind of curious to see what you guys think about me getting into these schools, I think I have a fairly good chance but I'll see what y'all think.

For basic info, I'm a white male from Athens, GA and attend a small (about 80 per grade) but very prestigious private school, one of the top ranked ones in the state.

Stats:

SAT- 2150 (750 reading, 710 math, 690 writing)
SAT II- 790 US History, 750 Chemistry
GPA- 3.8 unweighted, 3.9 weighted
APs through junior year- European History (5), Chemistry (4), English Language (5), US History (5)
Next year I'm taking English Literature, Bio, and Economics AP and 2 honors classes

ECs
4 years of varsity football, 3 years starting
2 years track (had shoulder surgery after sophomore year from a football injury and can't throw shot put anymore)
3 years club rugby- Team Captain for all 3 years I've played and also have gotten the sportsmanship award
A few club memberships
President of school's film society my senior year
National Honor Society
Probably a few things I'm forgetting but most of my stuff is athletics
Volunteer work with ESP (Extra Special People), a charity in my town that runs a summer camp for disabled people and does various other events throughout the year

Work Experience- summer between freshman and sophomore year I worked 15 hours a week at a zoo, summer between junior and senior year worked on a farm (essentially a farmhand), after football season this year I'm going to be working part time at a pizza place

So yeah, what do you guys think for admissions into these schools?

UCLA
USC
UT- Austin
UNC- Chapel Hill

What is your class rank?

Anyway, your ECs, academics, and athletics are quite strong, and I think that you would get into all of the schools that you listed. You may want to consider applying to several more selective schools as your reaches, if that interests you.

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1371747-chance-me-what-tier-college-should-i-looking.html</a></p>

My school doesn’t do class rank because of the academic rigor we have, it would end up hurting rather than helping a lot of kids. Out of the 82 kids in my grade I’m not even in the top 10%, I could be if I worked harder but I’ve always been a bit of a slacker. What more selective ones would you think? I guess out of those USC is the most selective (23-25% acceptance rate)

I’d also like to hear matches if anyone can think of any schools that match up well with my stats

Statistically you are at the average (USC) to above the averages (UT). The issue is how selective are the 3 states schools for OOS applicants.

UCLA - Very popular with in-state Californians so that there are fewer OOS spots available. There have been reports that in an effort to raise more money that there have been more out-of-states slots authorized. This helps your admission chances but probably means there’s little if any non-loan financial aid available.

USC - Your are right on the averages for the 2011 admitted class http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1112/USCFreshmanProfile2011.pdf</a>. You’re right that in 2011 the admit rate was 23% but with the change to the CommonApp applications jumped nearly 25%; the 2012 class had an admissions rate of ~18.5%. For me, with more than 80% of the applicants getting rejected it’s hard to think of a school as anything but a reach.

UT-Austin - Texas law mandates that the top 7% (used to be top 10%) of any Texas high school graduating class essentially is automatically admitted to UT. This means that well over 90% of the class could be filled with Texans, leaving very few spots for OOSers. If you’re applying to the business school the stats are even worse.

UNC-Chapel Hill - This is one of the most popular schools for academically strong OOS candidates (along with UCLA, Virginia, Berkeley and Michigan). I don’t know if there is a hard cap on the number of out-of-staters they accept but the number seems to be a steady 18%.

You have a good profile. You might get admitted to all four, but I wouldn’t be shocked if you were shut out either. To my way of thinking, for reasons beyond your academic performance, all of your schools are somewhat of a reach. Worse still, given budget cutbacks, the OOS publics are very unlikely to be generous with aid.
