Chance Me! UCs, Privates (Will Chance Back!)

Hey guys, I'm a senior at a large California public High School.

Here are my school lists...I plan on doing Pre Med, majoring in Biochemistry most likely.

3.9 W GPA
3.7 UW

Schools:
UCI
UCD
UCLA
UCSD
UCSB

Private:
Occidental
Pomona
Emory
U of Chicago (super reach)
Cornell (maybe if I take my SAT II)

I know a lot of these schools are big reaches but UCI and UCD are the top of my list. The are some of the best fit for pre med.

-Father passed away of heart attack, single parent
-Income <35000
-30 ACT (first try, retaking in December and plan to study)

This years schedule:
AP Literature - B+
AP Calc AB - A
H Molec Genetics - A
H Economics - A
Art - A

Last Year:
Honors Pre Calc: A/A
APUSH : B+/B+
AP Physics - C+/A-
American Literature - A/B+
Varsity Golf

EC:
Golf, have been playing for 6 years. Played my first year in school and won medalist in a pretty large tournament. Also played in AJGA and SCPGA tournaments, placement top 10 in 2 of the biggest.
Guitar: Have been taking lessons for 3 years, played in a band, live, written my own music and study a lot of theory/composition.

Volunteering:
A lot of organizations but I have been involved with Meals on Wheels all of my life with my Grandpa. Probably put in over a thousand hours.

Essays: I feel they are pretty good and reflect my desire to make an impact on society and expand my knowledge.

I know my grades aren't the highest until this year, I'll plan to explain this. I had some serious things happen in my family through HS (Stage IV cancer, very severe heart attacks, and saw my Grandma fall to emphysema). Last year I was on my own for weeks at a time throughout the year because of the things that had to be dealt with.

Thanks guys...will chance back! I am also open to other school suggestions.

UCI/D/SB-Safety/lowmatch
UCSD-High match
UCLA-High match/lowreach
Emory-Reach
UChicago-HIGH reach
Cornell-Mid/HighReach

Good luck! And chance back please

I’m sure colleges will understand what you’ve been through. I’m very sorry about your father D: Anyways,
UCI/D/SB-low match
UCLA-high match
Emory-low reach
UChicago-high reach
Cornell-reach

Good luck and keep your head up!
Chance back please!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1241354-decent-gpa-high-sat-1-weak-ecs.html</a></p>

You will want to convert your GPA for the UCs, using the UC GPA formula, but I agree with Blarghle on his/her assessment, except I’d say UCI and UCD are matches and not safeties, along with UCSB being a match. You may want to add UCSC to your list if you want a real safety.

Yeah, sorry my UC GPA is 3.8. Thanks so far everyone.

Also, I’m a first generation college student if that changes anything.

UCI/D/SB- In
UCSD- 60% in
UCLA- Reach
Emory-Reach (bigger than you’d think) 30ish%
UChicago- Bigger Reach 25%
Cornell- Biggest Reach 20%
Take the December test and still apply to all these schools, with the right reader your chances could increase for all your reaches. By the way we have very similar stats, and my father passed away due to heart problems right before freshman year. Good luck

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1242795-yes-another-chance-thread-chance-4-chance-29-act.html</a></p>

uchicago is the biggest reach school for you
i believe admit rate will be less than 10% this year

you will (and should) get some boost since you are from single parent, low income first generation family

essays are very important for uchicago
show your passion for learning and be creative

good luck to you
i hope you get into uchicago
it is a great college

I think you will be accepted to some or all of the mid-tier UCs and possibly UCSD with all the other schools on your list varying levels of reaches. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that SoCalStudent, it is definitely something you never want to go through but I think it has really made me who I am and gives me a very different perspective on life. I chanced you as well, good luck!

As far as my essays, my AP Lit teacher is helping me construct and revise any of my essays so I should be good but I want to make sure I write about the right things. Anyone else?

UCI/D/SB-Safety
UCSD-match
UCLA-low reach
Emory-Reach
U Chicago-high reach
Cornell-Mid reach

Bump…Take out Occidental and Pomona. Checked them out and not my thing. Also add Northwestern and NYU instead. I plan on taking SAT II, how would good scores help me out?

Northwestern mid-reach, NYU possible but doesn’t give good aid.

Yeah, that’s I’ve heard. A friend of mines sister just graduated and she is in debt up to her eyeballs.

your unweighted GPA looks good, get that weighted GPA up maybe take more honors classes. UCs are really numbers-oriented.
Good luck!
can you chance me pleaseeeeeee no one has yet );
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1245148-chance-me-ucla-ucsb.html</a></p>

Bump…

Can’t apply to Cornell, didn’t have a way to get to the SAT II.

I think you have pretty good chances at all of your schools. UChicago is very fit/essay oriented so you might want to spend a good amount of time on your “why” essays. Other than that maintaining strong senior grades should be your top priority.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1245458-big-upward-trend-strong-sats-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

I think you are in at Occidental, I/D/SD. I know nothing about Pomona, Emory, U Chicago, and Cornell are all reaches though. I think your personal circumstances if explained well in your counselor recommendations and on your own will be enough to supplement your drop in your grades. Those are very hard things to go through and adcoms will understand to some extent. You did really well considering the stress you were under, and they will most definitely see that.

I think you’ll be fine everywhere except maybe at Cornell, Emory and Chicago. Those are crapshoots anyways so it is impossible to tell.

ll are goid matches but cornell and uchicago. good luck! chance me please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1247480-chances-getting-into-boston-university.html</a> thanks!
