I personally think they’re all matches, but I’m not so sure about CalPoly. Good luck!
Please chance me back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1672761-chance-me-for-stanford-university.html

UCSD - low reach
UCD - high match
UCI - high match
Cal Poly SLO - high match
Cal Poly Pomona - safety

GPA is the most important factor for getting into the UCs. Your GPA is below average, so you will probably only be accepted by Cal Poly Pomona. Also, your downward trend may hurt you.

I have a 4.00 capped UCGPA and a 2300 SAT score. UCSD, UCD, UCI, and Cal Poly SLO rejected/waitlisted me.

SLO/UCSD: High Match/Low Reach
UCD/UCI; High Match
CPP: Safety
Good SAT/ACT scores which help your less than 4.0 UC GPA. EC’s look good too.
Good Luck

@Mangiafuoco‌ Dang, that sucks. Do you know any other good mechanical engineering schools that would be matches or low matches for me? Because i’m afraid my current list of schools is full of high matches and reaches.

@jonahtang: I would apply to UCR, UCSC, CPP, CSULB, SJSU and SDSU. You have good choices at the Cal States. ME is very competitive by SDSU and CPP very good programs.

@Gumbymom Actually, that brings up another thing i’m wondering. I’m planning on getting a master degree in Mechanical Engineering so by comparison, would a good ME program in the CSU have as good of a graduate program as some of the UCs like UCSB or UCSC?

You can always go to a Cal State for Undergrad and then apply to the UC’s for grad school. Just because you have an Undergrad degree from a UC, doesn’t mean you will automatically get into the same UC for Grad school.

UCD - Match
UCI - Match
UCSD - Match
Cal Poly SLO - Match
Cal Poly Pomona - Safety

@Gumbymom‌
Would job employers usually look at where i went for undergraduate? Also, reputation wise, what’s the comparison between a Cal State’s graduate program and a UC’s (let’s say SLO or Pomona and UCI)

And also, how much more difficult would it be to transfer from say Cal Poly Pomona to UCSD graduate program or UC Davis program than from UCSD to UCSD’s graduate program?

@jonahtang:
Regarding employers: My husband works for a heavy civil company that recruits undergrads regularly from the Cal States especially from Cal Poly SLO and Cal Poly Pomona. When he interviews prospective engineers, he is looking more for internships and experience than where they got their degree.

Regarding grad school: I am not really up to date regarding Grad school admissions, but if you have a good GPA for undergrad and are able to get internships during your undergrad, you would have many good opportunities when applying for grad school. Yes, being in a UC would give you direct contact with many professors, but if you prove yourself in your undergraduate program, you should be able to get accepted a good grad program.

Cal Poly SLO is highly regarded in the Bay Area. One company I worked for the CEO is from Berkeley EECS(which is expected), VP of engineering is from Brooklyn City something, and the Chief Technical Officer is from Cal Poly SLO. They all have significant equity in these positions. Under VP of engineering is a bunch of EECS from Berkeley. These guys also worked for the CTO as well. Look at Apple companies, there are tons of people from Cal Poly SLO, for example the ex-CFO went to Cal Poly SLO business school.

I see. Thanks for the info guys. Considering how much cheaper cal states are, I’ll consider going to Pomona over some of the private OOS schools i’m also applying to. I’ve always considered going to Cal Poly SLO because i’ve heard it was highly reputable. Even equal to some of the UCs. It was really only Pomona and the other less regarded cal states (from what i heard, not putting down those schools) that i was unsure about actually attending.
