Chance Me? UF, GA Tech, NYU, Emory and Georgetown. Will Chance Back!

Hey guys! Would some of you geniuses help me out and chance me for the colleges below?

Straight out of a middle class family from Florida!

UF- Fall Term

GA Tech- Summer

NYU- Fall

Emory- Fall

Georgetown-Fall

Ok so on my ACT I scored a 29 which was not what I was hoping for however my English and Math scores were pretty decent in my opinion. It's good enough to solidify a place in the mid-50% in each college while the Math put in me in the top 25% for all of them I believe.

English-29 Math-34 Reading-25 (Lord Bless My Soul) Science-28 Writing-27

I understand that for Georgetown I have to send all my scores so here it goes I first started off with a 1590 on the SAT in my Junior Year. I then got a 27 (E-25, M-31, R-25, S-28 W-24) on the ACT in September of my Senior Year and then got a 29 in the next month. Would this continuous growth in scores help at all? Before all you guys start dying on the floor laughing at my SAT which was awful I did have speech problems growing up and was placed in a speech class throughout elementary and middle school (Something I should place on my application?). I am doing the subject tests next week and from the looks of it I am probably going to score a 700-730 on Math Level 1 and 2 and Biology right now is a mystery (somewhere in the 600's?)

I have a 3.7 Unweighted GPA, Class Rank 66 out of 852. and will have completed 12 AP courses by the end of my senior year.

My recommendation letters and essays are pretty decent and ECs as well. I performed at a national music festival, 1st chair on my instrument in the county throughout high school, editor for an NBA analysis that has about 800k readers, work as a math tutor, in 6 different honor societies (one of them as treasurer) and in 2 other clubs. Also I was an Assistant Basketball Coach for a youth league, a clinician for a middle school band camp and ran a booth at Relay for Life in order to raise money for the organization. Also the household I came from was rough (had to overcome domestic violence and a sibling ran away from home which put everything in my home into awe).

However my real question is even though my ACT composite isn't top notch to compete at Emory or Georgetown, will they put more emphasis on my English, Writing and Math? I understand GA Tech only looks at English, Math and Writing which gives some confidence getting in however Emory and Georgetown doesn't look at my ACT like that. Do you guys think that my English and Math will pull me through? (Well mainly my Math...) Oh and by the way I am planning to do Biomedical Engineering. I am planning to do the 3+2 program at Georgetown and probably leaning towards the the 3+2 program at Emory or do Biochemistry.

For each college can you guys rate my chances as a percentage of getting in? I understand nothing is for sure but a percentage could tell me how good my odds are, but hey do whatever you guys want! Once again thanks to everyone who responds!

My sister goes to Georgetown and while your ECs and essays look promising, your standardized test scores are definitely on the low end. I think it’s a far reach for you. I’m not sure about the others.

whats your exact GPA?

NYU depends on your major, Stern? That would be a reach. But Tisch? You have a solid chance. Its all relative to what you want to do.

UF I say you have a solid chance especially since youre in-state, consider yourself in.

Georgetown is a reach. If you could retake your ACT in December that would significantly help you. At least a 30+ would improve your chances for all of these colleges.

Idk much about GA Teach or Emory

I think you have a good shot depending on the quality of your essays.

@boogapenguin‌ It’s the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering.

I can only respond on Ga tech and Emory, 2 schools my son applied to. Sorry, the ACT is too low. Can’t you retake them and study?

I think they are all reaches for you, and they are also all very expensive. You definitely need to add some safeties to your list, including some that are more affordable. You did not mention what you plan to study, but your choice of major will affect how your scores and ECs are viewed. Have you considered some of the other public universities in Florida?

@mommyrocks please read the whole thing. I did mention my major and I did get into University of Georgia already. I think it’s kind of absurd to say that it’s a reach for UF when I got a 29 on the ACT while there average ACT average is a 27 just saying. I am mainly collecting opinions for NYU, Emory and Georgetown.

Okay, so biomedical engineering it is. I would recommend choosing a place that has an ABET accredited program. See www.abet.org

UF-good shot NYU- can go 50/50 GA tech- low reach Emory/Georgetown- high reaches. Overall profile is solid, just ACT score at those last 3 schools is kinda iffy. best of luck man!

Bump

I think something to focus on is demonstrating a passion in your application. While having lots of ECs is a good thing you want to make sure to demonstrate what you would contribute to their school. Being a jack of all trades will work at some schools but especially at the very competitive elite schools (Georgetown, etc.) they want people who will bring something to their school and being good at a lot of things isn’t always enough. To counter this I would suggest being deliberate in demonstrating passion/focus in your application (supplements, interview, etc.)

please chance me back

I’d say you have a good chance at getting into NYU. For georgetown and Georgia tech It would all depend on your weighted gpa

I agree with a lot of the things people say Georgetown will depend heavily on your essay and GPA

Best of Luck

Chance me please http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1713130-chance-me-i-will-chance-back.html#latest

Congrats on University of Georgia! Here are the three you were mainly looking for:

NYU- Fall: I think you have a decent chance of getting in. With your extracurriculars, you seem strong. And although your ACT score is not where you wanted it to be, I think you are at the bottom of their mid-range of acceptances, so that is still pretty good (although it is on the lower spectrum of who they accept, you have to keep in mind that it is better than about 1/4 of the accepted people)

Emory- Fall: I don’t honestly know too much about Emory, but from what I have heard from my friends, it seems to be really tough to get in there.

Georgetown-Fall: This one is a reach for everybody. Since your essay is strong, it should raise your chances, but it’ll definitely come down to a numbers game (not by scores per se, but probably by how many they can/want tp accept- and this applies for everybody)

Could you chance me, please? (:

Hi, again. I think for Georgia Tech, you have a pretty good chance. It’s definitely easier to get into than Georgetown,a and it would probably be a solid target for you. You will definitely be competing with some stellar people (just because they are all techies and probably have a passion for it), but I think you probably have a 60/40 if not 70/30 chance of getting in (the first number being a yes), so I think you should be good.

You have a solid chance at UF, but don’t treat it as your safety. With it’s holistic admissions, it can seem a bit random, and plenty of students with better stats get denied. On the other hand, plenty of worse students get accepted.

Apply to at least one other Florida school (USF, or UCF for example, both have solid engineering programs), you’ll be offered significant merit and can have them as your “safety” if the other schools don’t work out (either you’re denied or they end up being too expensive).

UF’s Biomedical Engineering program is limited access. You have to apply as a junior to enter the program. The first group (of 20) graduated last May.

What are you plans, after you complete your BS in Biomedical Engineering? This is a field that requires a MS to be viewed as employable in the Biomedical field. UF carefully selects it’s candidates to ensure they have post-graduation plans, such as pursuing a Masters, Medical School, Law School, etc. Being accepted to UF is no guarantee of being accepted into the Biomedical Engineering program.

It’s not uncommon for students to get a BS in another engineering field,(EE, ME, ChemE) and then a Masters in Biomedical Engineering (this is the path followed by almost all MS Biomedical engineering majors at UF). If you’re willing to follow this path, you’ll be able to choose from more engineering schools. It also gives you the option of working after you’ve earned your BS and delaying your masters until some future date.

Emory’s 3+2 Biomedical Engineering program is with Georgia Tech. Most Emory students following this path want to go to med school. However, it does take an additional year (and cost), while going directly to GT would allow you to do it in 4 years (without the 2nd degree from Emory). Of course, acceptance to the 3+2 programs are not guaranteed, you will need to make the GPA and course requirements. It’s also a pain leaving your college and friends early (after 3 years) to go to a new university. At least GT is in the same town (Atlanta) as Emory, so it’s a much easier transition.

Georgetown offers the 3+2 program, because it doesn’t offer any engineering programs. Same issues as Emory, but it’s partnered with Columbia University. Another expensive option.

Good Luck!

Not much chance at GTech, Emory or Georgetown with your scores. Why haven’t you taken your subject tests yet? Not good planning on your part.

You have a decent shot at NYU; definitely talk about the speech classes and your unfortunate family atmosphere (I’m sorry if I’m being insensitive…).
Georgetown is pretty much a reach - though biomedical engineering may not be as hard to get into as poli sci in that school…
Emory is a low reach I think.
Georgia Tech is a high match according to me
I don’t really know about your other schools…
Overall I think you fall into a comfortable middle 50% in most schools
Good luck!

@mnm111‌ Even if I applied to Georgia Tech for the Summer Term? Also is it fair to say not much a chance at GT? The ACT Math falls right in the top 25% and the English above the bottom 25% while the writing is in the middle. I thought I would have a decent chance but not sure how good. btw they only look at the ACT English, Math and Writing, and I am only submitting my highest ACT. The subject tests on the other hand are a different story, it’s not like I am going to miss the deadline to submit them anyways.
