Come from a challenging Jesuit HS (Boston College HS) that has a high acceptance rate into UMASS Amherst.

I'm not too concerned about scholarships, considering its already a reach, but what are my chances and how can I help them leading up to applying?

It’s always hard to chance you if you are trying to rely on special factors to gain admission, but given the SAT/GPA score graph for UMass-Amherst, I think you can do it with convincing enough essays.

See, I don’t think that UMass Amherst can be considered a reach for ANYONE due to its sheer size and high acceptance rate. If all you’re looking to do is get accepted to UMass Amherst, then considering your good SAT score and your special factors (despite your 2.9 UW, which doesn’t factor in your AP classes), then let me be the first to tell you that you will most likely get accepted.

Now, if you’re wondering whether or not you’ll be accepted into any special programs at the school (ie. Honors College), then I’d say it becomes far more difficult. But the basic acceptance is bound to come to you.
