Summer has just started for me and I am now officially a senior! I have definitely been thinking about colleges lately because I am gonna be applying in a few months! I am from North Carolina and the top school I would like to get into is UNC Chapel Hill. Please chance me for UNC-CH. Also chance me for NC State, Duke, and George Washington University. Any tips you could give me to make my summer and senior year productive and successful would be great!

Caucasian female from low income family
Unweighted GPA- 3.84
Weighted GPA- 4.85
Took SAT today- Hoping to get at least 1780
So far I have taken 5 AP's- AP Psych, AP Government, AP Human Geography, AP Lang, and AP Environmental
Will be taking at least 4 or 5 AP's my senior year- AP Bio, AP Lit, AP Stat, AP Computer Science, and one more that I am not sure of yet.

I have also taken two dual enrollment courses at a community college- Sociology and Microeconomics. Will be taking Macroeconomics my senior year.

Some of my extracurricular activities include being a member of Key Club, Teen Republicans, Tri Chi, Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, and VP of a club to help prevent malaria in other countries.

I have volunteered almost 300 hours. Some of my hours have been spent volunteering at a museum. I have spent over 100 hours helping to promote campaigns for local politicians. I helped the mayor of my town get elected as well as several local congressional members. I have been asked to help another person over the summer who is running for the NC Senate. I have also volunteered for Key Club and tutor younger children occasionally.

This year I was also selected to be a Junior Marshal for my school which means I am basically in the top 10% of my class currently.

If you want to know anything else then just ask

Thanks!

NC State: safe
UNC: low match/match
Duke: reach

Your SAT is low, but UNC is really not that hard to get into in-state. Your grades and EC’s are good for UNC. Duke, however, is a different story. Your SAT is WAY low for Duke and your EC’s are also low, but your grades are there.

Chance back (similar schools)

Can anyone else chance me. I know Duke is a reach, but I plan on raising my SAT score and I have family connections there

Is anyone alive out there?

I think it is pretty hard to chance you without SAT scores. Come back and post when you know them, and people can chance you and also make suggestions. Since you are from a low income family, it will be important to consider how colleges will award financial aid. Do you qualify for Questbridge? This would be a good program to look into. I am not certain of the deadlines, so take a look at it.

im from NC…you are definetly into UNC! If you cant do well on the SAT, try the ACT. You HAVE to get your SAT up or else UNC might become a reach. If you get your SAT to atleast a 1900+ or an ACT of 29+, you are set for UNC. Duke is hard; you have to write killer essays. But overall, you are in good shape! Good Luck! PM me if you have specific questions/

Thanks for the replies! I looked at QuestBridge! I wish I had applied this year though Please chance me if you havent

Although you have posted your projected scores, it’s really not possible to chance you without knowing the actual scores. I agree with the posters who suggested taking the ACT too. Some people do better on one than the other. Since you are a NC resident- did you take it? I thought it was administered to all juniors in the NC public schools. If you post your score, that would give people an idea of how to chance you.

Your academic record is great, but 1780 SAT is low for top schools. With some test prep over the summer you could raise your score. Your GC might have access to SAT/prep books, and if you have some friends who are graduating and going to college you could ask them if they would pass theirs on to you since they don’t need them now. Also, ask your GC if you qualify for test vouchers and application fee waivers.

Is it too late to apply to Questbridge for the college application cycle? Although they have a program for juniors, I thought you could still apply as a senior.

Duke would be a big reach with a 1780 SAT score. Having said that, if someone in your immediate family is a major donor nothing is out of the question. Apply ED to boost your chances.

I didn’t do very well on the ACT. I got a 23. I prefer the SAT and I am going to be studying diligently for it over the summer and I am hoping to bring my score up to atleast a 1900 because I think this will help me to get into UNC

Your GPA and test scores are kinda off. UNC and NC State should be fine but Duke is only a reach because of the scores. Duke is a 2200+ and 33+ SAT and ACT school.

Your scores at the moment don’t reflect your GPA, and they would make Duke and GW very unlikely, UNC and NCSU also very much a stretch. I think your plan to study and raise your scores is a good one. So for now, consider your current college plan your dream plan. However, there are two issues of concern here. Every school on your list is selective and admissions are very competitive. You also need other colleges on your list that you are more likely to get into and can afford. Your other concern is your parents’ financial situation. Even if you are admitted to college, if you can not afford it, then this is not a realistic plan.

Keep working on raising your scores as much as you can, but when you know them, return here as there are many people here who can advise you on making a college list. Even if you apply to UNC and NCSU, you need to have additional plans as admission to those colleges is not guaranteed.

I dont think NCSU is a stretch but thanks anyways

I wasnt planning on sending in my ACT score

I think my safeties are going to be UNCW and UNC-Charlotte. If I get a high enough SAT score then NC State will be a safety as well.

NSCU has become more selective lately. Certain majors, like engineering, are very competitive. Your grades are excellent, so hopefully your SAT scores will be good. Once you know them, you will see how they compare to those of admitted students.

Make sure you look up stats for the schools that you want to get into before posting something like this. It’s absurd to even think about getting into Duke with a 1780. But, considering the course-load that you’ve taken and the GPA that you have, I think you may be a little under-confident if you’re shooting for a 1780

Unless you have a major hook, 1780 makes Duke a high reach. Most schools seem to value GPA over test scores among the admissions variables, though, so you’d have a fair-to-middlin’ shot at UNC (given that you are in-state) and a pretty decent shot at NCSU, in my opinion. If you cannot improve on the test scores and that keeps you out of Duke, but you get into UNC and/or NCSU, consider this: you’ll be at either Michael Jordan’s alma mater or at the school that Jim Valvano, maybe one of the greatest people who ever lived, helped to make famous. The future looks bright any way the cookie crumbles.

Thank you @prezbucky for you advice! It was really helpful and I am definitely going to try to improve on my test scores some. When I get my SAT score back at the end of June, I think I will be able chance myself better and decide exactly where I want to go.
