May I suggest a book for your parents? It’s called “Where you go is not who you’ll be”. Written by a NYT education reporter. It was eye-opening and reframes how people can be smart consumers of higher ed.
Don’t forget the logic (e.g. as practiced in physics, math, philosophy, etc.).

OP, it’s like anything else in life! Is the Ritz better than a Motel 6? It doesn’t matter if you can’t afford the Ritz! I drive a beat up Honda. Is a brand new Tesla higher ranked? Don’t know, don’t care. I bought something I could afford which met my needs.
You and your family will need to figure out what is affordable and will meet your needs… just like everyone else!
