Thanks!

“although I know they go mostly by numbers” Actually, UMD commits to a holistic review process, and considering both your GPA/Rank and extracurriculars I doubt they would even second guess accepting you. not even considering the fact that you’re in state.

i think you have basically a 99% chance of getting in

For the sake of making everyone aware of how hard UMD really is, I am telling you that Maryland accepts the most intelligent students who were able to maintain over a 4.0 gpa in rigorous courses (AP/honors). It’s proximity to Washington D.C and numerous projects that the University is working on has helped it grow into a public ivy. That being said I think your gpa is fine but your test scores are a lot lower than UMD’s standards and that could potentially hold you back in the admissions process. Nevertheless you should definitely apply. It is a great school that is only getting more competitive every year. It is now in the same category as UVA, Michigan, UNC, UCLA, William and Mary, etc…

Your GPA is certainly strong enough to qualify for admission, but Maryland probably will favor those with higher SAT/ACT scores. It is now a very popular University to apply to as the rise of many of its science and business programs (not to mention it being 4 miles outside D.C) have helped it grow into a public ivy. The reality is you probably need great grades, several APs, and above average test scores to be in serious consideration. I know many kids from Virginia and NC who took more pride in the fact that they got into UMD out of state than the fact that they got into their highly respected state schools (e.g. UNC, UVA, W and M). The kids I know from New Jersey who got into Maryland and NYU were truly split on their decision. It really came down to whether they preferred DC or New York. I hope you get in, it would be a huge accomplishment.
