UMich doesn’t use weighted GPA. You appear to be a competitive applicant, but the OOS acceptance rate is 19% for the Class of 2022. And even high stat students are deferred in EA. The average uwGPA of the Class of 2023 was 3.9 and the 25/75 for ACT scores was 32-35. All you can do now is to submit some great LOR’s, write great essays and communicate and/or demonstrate your strong desire to attend UMich.

Agree with the above. You are accomplished. Any chance you might want to row? That could be your way in also. Talk to the coach. They actually have a good team.

Wow, thanks @sushiritto. I didn’t realize it was so tough for an OOS student to be admitted. Very helpful!

Yep, being an OOS student applying to a top public school like UMich, UVa, UNC-CH, UCLA, Cal, UT, etc. is going to be difficult even when you’re a strong candidate like yourself.

You are clearly well qualified. Michigan likes scholar-athletes. As a woman, you might have a better chance in engineering, which is something to consider if you are so inclined.

One of the things I noticed right away is how your junior year looked tougher than your senior year. AP stats and AP psych are relatively easier AP classes. Living in Mexico makes AP Spanish appear fairly easy. Physics is by far the hardest of the 4. Interested while you bailed out of AP Lit.

@gymfanatic2020 Why are you looking specifically at Michigan for Public Health?
Overall, you have a great profile, and would be a strong candidate for any program at any college, especially Public Health programs. However, reaches are reaches, and UMichigan is a reach college for OOS applicants.

@sushiritto As an aside - while UC applicants have a benefit in that their honors are weighted while for OOS applicants only AP and IB courses are weighted, the acceptance rates for OOS students to the most popular UCs (UCLA, UCB, and UCSD) are higher than that of the in-state students - there is no cap on OOS acceptances, unlike for UNC, UT, etc.

@MWolf As I mentioned, the top public uni’s are still difficult for OOS students. I didn’t mention specific rates, but instate vs OOS acceptances at UCLA and Cal are:

Cal 3,462 OOS admitted, 20,193 OOS apps = 17% OOS acceptance rate
Cal 9,634 instate admitted, 50,123 instate applicants = 19% instate acceptance rate

UCLA 3,808 OOS admitted, 23,023 OOS apps = 16.5% OOS acceptance rate
UCLA 8,352 instate admitted, 69,558 instate applicants = 12% instate acceptance rate

For me, the instate vs OOS acceptance rates are “close enough for horseshoes.”

Also, unless I misunderstood, the UC’s do cap OOS enrollment.

And although there isn’t a published OOS enrollment cap for UMich, UMich does appear to have capped it’s OOS enrollment at around 47% of the freshman class, because the last 2-3 years has seen a decline in the OOS acceptance %.

OOS enrollment by class:
Class of 2020 47%
Class of 2021 46%
Class of 2022 45%

my school recommends only taking one ap english because schools only give credit for 1 and there are no more difficult aps for me to take. i skipped a year of math so i have exhausted my school’s challenging math options and i wanted 4 yrs of social science which left me with psych and human geo bc those are the only ones my school offers to seniors. my school is also really big and understaffed so we are not allowed to double up on sciences so thats not an option either. this was the most difficult course load i can take bc i took most of the difficult classes my school offers last year.

@Knowsstuff thanks for the advice but i am definitely not good enough or tall enough for their team

Look at your schools Naviance if you use that. See who got in prior. Apply early and write a great essay.

@gymfanatic2020 Just show lots of interest and passion in essays… or you could get deferred. You have the stats.
