Schools don’t care enough about geographic diversity to overlook a math score in the 30s. Especially since they already have kids from FL at the school. I think kids on cc make way too big a deal about being from ur states and it gets people’s hopes up too much. I don’t know anything about ichan at Choate but were the kids with such low scores also urm?
I understand you are set on that school list so I guess my advice is that you need to lift your score by a lot.
Florida is not an underrepresented state in NE BS. Choate has 642 boarding students from 38 states, SPS has 548 from 40 states. Choate has 9 Floridians (I don’t know that for a fact, but trusting your statement), SPS has 10 Floridians. Not a meaningful difference. Florida would still fall in the top half of 38-40 states.
That doesn’t mean you would not be admitted. We don’t know that. I am just pointing out that the whole “hook” thing is way overblown on CC. Even a student from a truly underrepresented state won’t get an admission if the committee is not convinced that he or she will thrive (rather than just survive) academically at that school.
I’m not 100% sure some of the scholars may have been URMs, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a factor in the decision of the admissions committee. I’ll copy and paste the requirements/definition of an Icahn Scholar below:
Originally created through the generosity of the Icahn Charitable Foundation, the Choate Icahn Scholars Program aims to make a difference in the lives of bright, motivated students. Each year Choate identifies up to ten students in its applicant pool that have significant levels of financial need, have established strong ties to their community, come from under resourced educational systems, and who demonstrate leadership potential. In addition to meeting their demonstrated tuition need, Choate Icahn Scholars receive financial assistance for books and academic supplies, transportation to and from home for the 4 major school breaks, and other school related needs. Choate Icahn Scholars attend Choate’s Summer Programs free of charge the summer before matriculation, at which point they commence the lifelong bonding of the Choate Icahn cohort group, which serves as a support system (along with the Program Director and advisers) to enable each individual to maximize their experience at Choate and beyond.
Recipients for the Choate Icahn Scholars Program are identified by the Admission Committee during the selection process. Recipients will be identified by the admission committee; there are no additional requirements or application materials for eligibility.
P.S. I wasn’t aware I was spelling it wrong in my OPs.
