Thought you d like to see that
Thank you! Surprised KWH wasn’t mentioned in the article. @Penn95
Just wanted to do a bit of an update here since this thread got quite a few views, haha! I’ve updated my college list since this post, so if anyone wants to chance me further with the new schools, that’d still be great.
I’ve decided that I’m probably going to apply to Yale SCEA (not Penn ED since my financial situation is a bit atypical). My new RD list is Penn, Brown, Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, UChicago, Hopkins, Vassar, Tufts, McGill, BU, UMD, SUNY Geneseo & CUNY (Macaulay)… I’ll probably take a few off, but not sure which. As I commented above, my ACT rose from a 33 to a 35, which was exciting, so now I’m just waiting on SAT II & AP results. I also signed up for AP Psych as an additional senior class. I’ve gone through a whole bunch of Common App drafts through my AP English class and gotten a lot of feedback. My teacher said the essay has grown tremendously, and I think I’m happy with it, for now, so I’ll be turning to supplements.
As for summer plans, I’m working as a classroom assistant at a non-profit organization in the city that holds creative writing workshops for local kids (ages 7-15) – I’ll be helping with classes like screenwriting & writing about politics, as well as copyediting, conferencing with kids about feedback, and editing an anthology of the students’ work. I also got an internship with a poetry organization, which I’ll leave unnamed for anonymity’s sake, doing social media & editorial work for a project involving urban literary installations.
Thanks again, everyone!
Thanks for the update! I think you have a great chance at most of the schools you have listed. Now that you have raised your ACT score to 35 (congrats!) you have virtually no weakness in your profile at all. Your GPA is great and so are your test scores. In addition, your ECs are very well centralized around your intended major/area of interest and also carry a lot of weight and recognition. Another thing to note is how unique these ECs are. Once again, I think you have a really good chance at most of the ivies except HYPS only because they are very unpredictable in choosing admits. Good luck! I would appreciate it if you could chance me back here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1995754-chance-me-low-gpa-rank-cornell-rice-wash-u-ucla-etc-p1.html
Thanks so much! I chanced you back. @tripledouble2000
Honestly, if your achievements are really what they sound like, then getting into UPenn shouldn’t be a problem at all. You’ll probably get into most, if not all, of the other non-Ivy schools. Brown, Georgetown and Yale are low reaches for you. Harvard and Princeton are high reaches, more so Harvard.
I’d appreciate it if you could chance me back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/2000649-chance-me-low-rank-common-ecs-cornell-harvard-wharton-etc.html#latest
Thank you! I’m thinking about applying to Yale SCEA instead of UPenn ED. Just chanced you back. @hhchubbycheeks
Just a further update --> I took my SAT II’s and got the results today. I got an 800 on US & a 750 on Math II (I’m a bit disappointed in the latter, but I figured it’s still 750+ & I’m not a math applicant). I also got 5’s on all of my AP exams for this year.
Finally done with standardized tests for college apps!
You should post this as a separate thread. The only comments on here should be ones chancing me (the initial poster) or making otherwise relevant comments to the original post. @msingh4087
As of today, I’m ranked 1/265 in my class!
My finalized college list is:
Yale, Penn, Princeton, Harvard, Brown, UChicago, Stanford, Vassar, Wesleyan, Hopkins, Tufts, McGill, UMD, SUNY Binghamton & CUNY Brooklyn. I’ll be applying early/rolling to Yale (SCEA), Binghamton (EA), UMD (EA) & McGill (rolling).
I’ll keep this thread updated as decisions come in!
All the best, writergirl! Your outstanding ECs, and strong GPA give you a very high chance that you get accepted at a top school.
Thanks! I’ll keep everyone posted. @Tamarix
Deferred from Yale. Sigh. I don’t know what else I could’ve done.
There are just so many people with great stats and so few spots. Don’t worry @writergirl0316 this time next year you will be at college having a great time. I was deferred as well, I’m surprised I wasn’t outright rejected, in a panic near the midnight deadline the CA went down and I hastily pasted my essay and cut out like 6 very important worlds! And my SAT/SAT2 scores are low even though I’m ranked 2 in my class. But I sent them anyway bc honesty is always best policy for me. I have an unusual talent so maybe that’s why they are keeping me around…who knows, it’s totally a blackbox
I hope so. I was totally expecting to be deferred, but it felt much worse than I thought I would. My confidence for all the rest of my applications took a hit. @harper3125
well, you are in good company!! Keep fighting the fight and “love thy safety”!!
Just wanted to thank everyone here for their continued support. It really has meant so much to me. Ultimately, I was accepted to Yale (after SCEA deferral), Brown, Penn, Johns Hopkins, Wesleyan, Vassar, McGill, Bing Scholars & Macaulay Honors at CUNY. Waitlisted Harvard, UChicago and Georgetown; rejected Princeton. Haven’t heard from Tufts and Stanford, but I don’t think they will affect my decision. Could not be more thrilled.
Also accepted into Stanford and Tufts!!
