I am just curious to know what my chances are to be accepted into: UPENN Wharton, NYU Stern, Northwestern Kellogg, UC Berkeley Haas, UMich Ross, Cornell Dyson, Carnegie Mellon Tepper....

THIS IS FILLED WITH REACHES OBVIOUSLY.... my parents want a big name school and i fully understand that my gpa is kinda low for some of these.. personally i want NYU Stern and will at least ed2, i feel like i have a decent shot there.. my parents wont let me ed1 there cuz they will want me to apply to like these big names.. not taking away anything from nyu lol.. but they are just like that..

School: Private School in Princeton, NJ (Hun School)
SAT (superscore): 2370 (800 in math, 800 in writing, 770 in critical reading)
i still need to take subject tests
GPA: around a 3.6 to 3.7 (3.8 freshman and junior year.. sophomore year was rough my friend committed suicide, lost my grandfather, and my sister was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.. i dont know how colleges will view this) (everything at my school is unweighted, no weighted gpas.
course rigor: AP Calc AB and AP stat as a sophomore. This year as a junior i am taking AP Calc BC and AP Euro. Next year I will be taking AP Spanish, AP Art History, Multi-variable Calculus. I know it isnt like over the top but private schools arent the same as public schools when it comes to the rigor of ap classes. i got a 4 on ap calc ab last yr. my school doesnt offer ap econ but i have taken regular. and honors for my core non ap classes

EC:
-I am an SAT and math tutor
-I have my own non profit organization. i started it by myself. it is a registered company and everything that helps artisans that are in poverty, with this i have tons and tons of community service hours. i go to small villages in different countries to make this possible. (its kind of a big deal i think)
-I have played varsity tennis at my school and was ranked in the top 30 in the state.. i am probably gonna get an award for this year from my coach.
-I played on the atlantic regional cricket team and we place 3rd in nationals. its kinda unique.

i will have strong essays. i have a lot to write about, and i am good writer.

haha this doesnt seem like too much compared to other kids on here.. but yeah that is what i have. im kinda banking on my SAT scores to take me far, and also the fact that i have my own company that helps the community showing my prowess in business

You know what I’m going to say – your SATs are tops, but your grades are a bit low for these schools. You have reasons for the lower grades – and it may help if someone (like your GC) can put together a letter explaining this.

As it stands – I think you can put together a credible application for all of the schools on your list (one exception, I’ll get to in a sec). Your chances at these schools – well, what are anyone’s chances at these schools. Perhaps your grades will hurt somewhat, but these schools have a holistic approach, and I don’t think it’s out of the question for any of them. Expand your list for schools with slightly lower standards/higher admit percentages, just in case. All you can do is apply, hope and have some easier matches/safety schools in case you don’t get in.

Exception to the list – Northwestern – Kellogg is the Graduate MBA school. NU doesn’t have an undergraduate business program per-se. There is an undergraduate business Certificate program through Kellogg, however, which is truly excellent and works well with majors in more than one of NU’s colleges.

i actually find that very interesting and useful… why did u decide to ed at tepper vs others? do you like tepper? do you regret not having to the chance to see where you would have placed with some better schools business wise?

looking at my stats is it worth applying ed1 to upenn wharton and then ed2 to nyu stern… or will applying ed2 to nyu lessen my chances there as well… i guess what im asking is if ed1 i have a shot at wharton… and if there is a significant difference in acceptance rates for ed1 or ed2 at nyu stern…

Hey, dude, no use getting frustrated with CC’ers. Just put a bump.

Anyways, you have amazing ECs and a great story to tell for your essays. The only thing lacking is GPA, but I still think you have a pretty decent shot for those schools. I know many who apply to UPenn’s Wharton don’t have great GPAs but have great extracurriculars like you, so just worry about writing essays.

really?? i find that so hard to imagine. i thought wharton would be filled with academically perfect kids… i guess knowing that gives me some light of hope. thanks
