Chance Me - UVA, William & Mary & Tulane

I am a white female from NOVA. My high school is very high achieving with many kids having 4.5-4.6 GPAs. Here are my stats:

Major - Communications or Psychology
ACT: took it twice - 34 in Sept and 35 in Oct (36 english, 36 reading, 35 science, 33 Math.

9 AP classes and 2 DE. (AP World History (5), AP Macro Econ (4), AP Micro Econ(4), AP US History (5), AP Psychology (5), AP Human Geo, AP Statistics and AP Government (2 classes). 2 DE classes and 4 Honors.

UW - 3.85, Weighted 4.1 (9th grade overseas so no grade bump for AP or Honors)

ECs: No leadership positions - Model UN, Debate (9th grade only), Choir (9th), AP Scholar with Distinction, National Honor Society, volunteer hours tutoring and at a non-profit, Math Tutoring Business, Lifeguard, Figure skater for 7 years.

Very good essay - DE English teacher said it was the best college essay he had read.

I think you would be in a very strong position to compete for a spot at William and Mary. Your brief description seems to align that school with you well. Hard working and focused. Less about the extracurricular activities.

I agree with privatebanker. William and Mary is on the small side, though. Have you considered Tech? Penn State? Clemson? UVA is ridiculously competitive, especially if you’re in Fairfax or Loudoun Counties. I know kids who were denied with a 4.2, so don’t be too tough on yourself. I’m sure you will find the right place for YOU. Good Luck!

Thanks for the replies. Do you think I should apply to W&M Early Decision II or I have a good chance of acceptance regular decision? I am in Loudoun County. W&M is my first choice but my parents are worried that I might feel differently in 6 months. I have also applied to VA Tech, UGA and VCU (where I have already been accepted (just VCU)). Not interested in JMU.

VA Tech is too rural and Clemson is too southern. I will probably stay in VA because we did the prepaid tuition when I was young so I can go anywhere in VA and the tuition is covered, unless the out of state schools offer enough merit to cover the difference. Penn State would be too expensive - doesn’t make sense to pay out of state.

Talk with your parents and revisit the school site often. And try to find the day in life videos out there for current or former students.

If you are going to stay in VA you know your choices. If EA is binding, think carefully. But you have uva w and m and smaller Christopher Newport types. Vmi and tech is out. So I would apply ea2 and rd to uva if ea is non binding. I would also apply to va tech to give you another option if things don’t work out at the others.

Maybe consider applying to Richmond as well

W&M doesn’t have early action, only ED1 and ED2. I did apply to UVA early action. I’m not counting on UVA, if I get in it will be because of my high ACT and essay. I’m 95% sure I will get into VA Tech but would probably prefer VCU over that because of it’s urban location. Not really interested in a small school.

Makes sense. VCU forgot about them. I would be shocked if you didn’t have a few to choose from in the end
