Letter of Recs: 8-9/10
Essay- 8/10
Unfortunately, I have a suspension for possession of drugs on campus, but in my opinion, I wrote a well thought out statement on the Common App about it on how my dad having cancer pushed me to resort to drugs, not sure how much of an impact the suspension has.

Intended Major: Biological Sciences

If anyone would like to read my common app essay, please reply on this thread or PM me!! Thank you so much!

bump

Please PM the common app response on drugs to me and I’ll weigh in afterwards. In your situation the essay will be of critical importance.

Pretty good, since they are heavily score-oriented (like literally the most of all schools)

Let’s first start with the good:

Great SAT scores, great SAT II scores and great PSAT - all indicators that you are a good test taker

GPA: your GPA is pretty good

ECs: pretty solid. The research is pretty impressive. Shows that you have a strong interest in science.

Now for the bad:

Course rigor: I would say that your course rigor is about average: 5 AP classes. But it sounds like your HS probably offers a lot more than only 5 APs. They will wonder why you didn’t take a more rigorous schedule

AP grades: the Chem and Euro history scores are low. I would not suggest including them. The low chem score is offset by a great SAT II score in Chem. This is confusing.

The drug possession:

I read the essay that you sent via PM. It shows that you are sorry for getting caught. Honestly I was a bit surprised that you explained the drug use because of stress from your father’s cancer. You show some maturity in the essay, but I probably would have liked to see something with less blame shifting. People make mistakes. Admissions people understand that. But what they don’t want to do is admit someone with a drug/alcohol problem who hasn’t reached acceptance. At several points in the essay you refer to other people being ‘truly addicted’, without mentioning yourself. It sounds like you are still in denial about your illness. Honestly can’t be sure after reading your response if you will ever relapse again or not. Unless perhaps you’ve addressed this in other essays, I don’t think you’ve completely shut the door on this issue.

So my advice:

I think it will be hard for most admissions committees to look past the drug suspension. It shows incredible immaturity, and also a lack of acceptance. Based upon this, I think it will be difficult for you. Continue to seek help for your illness and gain insight.

Good luck

It seems like you have a really good chance so far!! (probably a 40% chance based on stats alone)
If you want, I could read your essay too!
